I've been conducting a few test at home using various lenses to determine which has the best IQ and weather it is better with IS on or off
The lenses that I used were: 18-55 3.5/5.6 IS kit lens
17-55 f2.8 IS USM
50mm f1.8
All shot were taken at the 55mm/50mm @ f 5.6, using indoor ambient light and a slow shutter speed of 1/6 using a tripod. I then did a series of test shots using a hot shoe flash at the same aperture but with a shutter speed 1/200 using a tripod. In both cases I did it with IS on even tho it was on tripod,
I found that on some shots the IS would make it worse, but not on all shots as it didn't repeat every time. I repeated the process with IS off and took handheld shots to compare the shots, with not a great deal difference to be honest.
The whole reason behind all this testing is because, I put some shots up for critique and and some one said my shots were soft and may have an issue , which I didn't see at the timeout posting and not sure how I could make them any sharper to be fair, The resize and flickr may have affected the quality a little.
So from that I decide to do some tests as I thought my 17-55 £ 700 pound lens was not much good, but doing some side by side test against the kit lens and nifty fifty, which has really good IQ I have concluded that my 17-55 is about on par with nifty fifty in terms IQ in test conditions, and I'm able to get better shots at lower shutter speeds with the IS on, on the 17-55 But in real world situations on bright days the nifty edges it on IQ, is the because the IS could be affecting the IQ at faster shutter speeds, am I best to turn it off and just use it on low light situations, or am I expecting to much of the 17-55, Ive read reviews that the 17-55 has IQ of L series glass if not better in some cases
Your thoughts please?
