I'm looking for cheap or free image stacking software that stacks multiple focussed shots automatically.

As mentioned Affinity Photo does a good job for a reasonable price. If you are Windows the google CombineZP which although no longer supported is a free download.
 
I have also frequently used Combine ZP which is not ideal but was free. Generally, I now use Photoshop which is easier to use and give good results.

I would use Photoshop but my version, CS3, doesn't have it. And I cannot afford to pay for something that I won't use often.

Anyone know if GIMP supports stacking images?

Downloaded Combine and it wants to open as a MSWord doc. No idea how to change the default setting (Win10)
 
I also have Affinity which I bought at half price on a special offer just for evaluation. I just tried it on a Focus stack and it worked but the result was nowhere near as good as Combine ZP. I suspect that the Alignment was a challenge.
