How can I find out if my isp and my website host thingys have imap mail servers?

I use an iphone, ipad and an imac and it's a right pain in the bottom to have a mail saved on one device and not the other.

I use BT for normal internet, but my website is with global gold.


Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp me please :D
 
I usually google something like setup imap mail <isp name> and usually find their support pages.

does anyone know if you can mix imap and pop servers , i have 4 mail addresses i need to keep track of. Also, the email questions link seems to suggest that the bt servers no longer do imap...... anyone on here a bt customer using imap?

If i swap the settings over, am i likely to lose everything from mac mail and the iphone ?

It seems to be working on the ipad with the globalgold account set up.....it delivered a message from January 2011 as soon as it verified, which was rather strange because it had my original reply with it :thinking:
 
One thing to be careful of with using IMAP on multiple devices is the deletion of emails. I have my 3 devices set up so that none of my devices directly deletes emails from the IMAP server. I then use my main PC (with Outlook) to purge the mailbox on the server.

You can of course 'mark for deletion' from anywhere but my Android phone with K-9 Mail actually deletes from the server unless I tell it not to in the settings.
 
I've only set the iPad up as imap so far as I think it'll delete everything off the phone when I edit the settings :eek: the iPad is set to never delete messages, even under pop3 control I have it set so only my mac deletes from the server.

Because as I said, with my Android phone using either the built in mail client or K9 Mail, unless I tell the program otherwise - and I'm not sure I can with the built-in app - if I delete an email, it deletes it from the server as opposed to just marking it for deletion. I don't want this to happen when I'm just de-cluttering my Android inbox.

I appreciate that not everyone may want to work this way but it is something to be aware of.
 
Could you use your android phone with pop and tick 'leave messages on server' or similar?
 
Can any mac mail experts answer the above for me (post5)

all the mails disappear from the ipad when I check them on the mac, I can only imagine that it's because the ipad is imap and the mac and iphone are pop3
 
Well looking at the settings given by BT and those on my iphone, i'd say yes

Yup... All 3 of my main mail accounts are POP3 (including my googlemail account), but I'm happy to download to a single device here and deal with them from it. POP3 is MUCH easier to manage if all you want to do is download everything on arrival or aggregate to a single computer.

Yes, use imap in mac mail and unless you move them to a local folder they will still show up on the iPad but as read instead.

Yes, I run fetchmail to retrieve from my demon email address using POP3, from where it ends up in a Maildir on a server in my back bedroom which is accessible by imap, so I can read email on my desktop, laptop, from my computer at work and on my telephone.
 
LOL sure but that is not a normal client function ;) As you say imap to your clients.

You could try by just replacing pop3 with imap in the server title i.e. pop3.server.com becomes imap.server.com If that doesn't work google or email their tech support. Every ISP I know of has imap. I wouldn't use pop myself now
 
I found this for you :)

For basic BT Yahoo Mail IMAP information.

Login to BT Yahoo Mail.
Select Options>More Options from the top right.
Select Mail for Mobile on the left.
This should take you to http://uk.mobile.yahoo.com/mail
Select the IMAP tab in the middle of the page.

The basic settings are:-

Incoming
Server = imap.mail.yahoo.com
Type = IMAP
Username = xxxx@yahoo.com (xxxx@btinternet.com also worked fine for me)
Password = as normal
Security = SSL
Port = 993
Outgoing
Server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Type = SMTP
Username = xxxx@yahoo.com (xxxx@btinternet.com also worked fine for me)
Password = as normal
Security = SSL
Port = 465

Nevertheless, I can confirm that it is possible to configure the email client to use IMAP. The settings are the same as those used for POP3, all you have to do is change POP3 to IMAP when configuring the client.
Below are the other settings required to configure the account.

1. Incoming/Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com
2. Username: This is the first part of your BT Yahoo email address; e.g. joebloggs (You will emit the @btinternet.com)
3. Password: This is the password for your BT Yahoo email account. These details will have been sent to you when you signed up for BT Broadband.
4. Incoming Mail Server Port: 110
5. Outgoing Mail Server Port:: 25


Then this follow up......


I tried calling you today to discuss this issue however you were unavailable.

I can confirm that the previous settings my colleague sent you to change your email account from a POP3 account to an IMAP account are correct. However the default incoming mail server port for IMAP accounts is actually 143 and not 110.

If you would try using the settings my colleague has sent you but trying the incoming mail server port as 143 instead of 110.


And finally this....

I can confirm that the set up of an IMAP is supported by BT however BT Techical Helpdesk can only assist with the set up of POP3 account. Unfortunately I cannot provide further assistance and have searched the forums also looking for answers in resolving your query but have come back with no possible solution.

I am sorry that I was unable to provide further assistance for this issue and the only other possible solution would be to speak to the BT Home IT Support team on 0800 500 238 who may be able to offer further assistance.

I'll have a play a bit later on as it's a pita to have to do the iPhone,iPad and mac all at the same time for each account. There also doesn't seem to be a way of editing the settings on the iPhone, seems you need to delete the account and re do it...... But that wipes all messages too :eek:

You could change the settings on your iMac and then re-sync the mail account using iTunes. Just looking at the iPhone now......

create the new account at the SAME TIME
once working drag all the mail from one account to the other in MAIL

There are a hell of a lot of email providers that still only support POP.

That is a chunk of this discussion. Most actually do even though quite a few only give you imap info when you specifically ask for it or you have to google it.

ITunes mail account sync never appears to do anything for me, tried making changes like that before and still had to mess about
 
Last resort would be to get Marcel to create you another account on the TP server or Slack Media called BriansBT and set that account to download all your mail from BT then attach to that account by IMAP.

To be fair their email running is outsourced through yahoo. And pop3 will cause less traffic on their servers. But in 2005 this is really something that should be standard use.

And that is exactly why you shouldn't use pop3 on a mobile device. Wiping the account deletes the messages whilst with imap they are still on the server.

As said before just create an additional new account based on imap.
 
You can also use a Google mail account to ingest mail via pop3 then serve it out via IMAP (or exchange). If you have your own domain you can use Google Apps to set up the email for your domain at Google, much better than ISP/hosting supplied email.

Demon don't, although it's coming soon, currently email can be collected by POP3 or received by SMTP.

A&A don't, they also expect you to use SMTP (although they also provide a seconday MX for your domain if it is taken through them, which stores the mail in a mailbox accessible by POP3).

I said every one I know of :D When changing ISP it is one of my criteria although having my own virtual server connected 24/7 means I only have to worry about my own now :)

I have my own physical server (12 year old p3/667 on ASUS CUSL motherboard, still going strong) connected 24/7 ;), it sits in the lounge running an IMAP server on one of my public IP addresses. Am going to replace it with a raspberry pie next month though, if they are for sale by then.
