I had an idea today while thinking about the black rapid straps, my canon stock strap gets in the way a lot and ive been looking into a black rapid strap, but they're kinda expensive and I came up with a soloution although not ideal kinda works for someone on a budget, here it is: (it is better that i explain with pictures)

someones probably thought of this before but its basically just the strap attached to one side of the camera, with a long lens it sits much nicer than with it attached to both sides

edit: If anyone's is confused how the 7d is backwards in the second shot its because it was shot in a mirror for connivance, that is my right arm (honestly I dont do them frequently)

When you pull the camera up to shoot, it's not going to glide along the strap smoothly like a BR though. Also, it doesn't look anywhere near as secure, you're hanging the body + zoom from one corner of the camera? I wouldn't trust that. The strap itself is going to cut into your shoulder too, unlike a BR, which is padded and designed to be worn over just one.
 
:D why cut corners on a strap after paying out a small fortune on a body and lens. Just buy a B\R.

Because most camera accessories are overpriced for what they are. They are over priced because suckers buy them at that price.
 
Or, if you think the B/R is overpriced, have a look at the Q Strap, or any of the other B/R style straps, plenty of alternatives to the expensive B/R straps about

I guess Im a sucker then :razz:- I like the security offered by these so called over priced accessories, as do many members on this forum - Im sure they'll just love being called a sucker

My gear cost me an absolute fortune and I for one would not risk it being damaged for the sake of a few £££

I paid €75 for my Black rapid sport. I have it about a year now, not a thread out ofplace on it. Considering the gear I hang from it can be up to €5000, I think that's a very good price for peace of mind. What's "sucker" about being sensible?

I get people doing a bit of DIY on the likes of soft boxes or reflectors [Have dabbled in DIY jobs myself] - as they can be stupidly priced for what you get. But when it comes to the stuff that protects your gear, or your gear depends on to work well, like bags and straps - no skimping.

I would like a black rapid strap just I have other prioritys at the moment, I guess this is just temporary until I can save up enough but it does work well and when you have a coat on it doesnt 'stick' when you pull it up and let it go as well as not getting in your way like in its standard position
 
I didn't know about Q strap when I bought my BR,would have considered it. At that price, there's really no excuse not to have a proper strap over a DIY job that might fail!

I tried this, hated it and got a neoprene sling strap for about a fiver. Very happy with it.

I was sceptical of forking out for a black rapid but one came up on here at a great price and have to say worth every penny.Dont think I could use any other type of strap now.
 
I have been using the Q strap with my D300s and 150-500 sigma and other time the 18-200 and would not consider going back to a normal strap.. Plus remember when you attach a heavy lens like 70-200, should you not have the strap on the lens rather then the body to not put too much strain on the mount??
 
It is wiser to attach to the tripod collar, much better balanced and more security. The base of a camera is no match for the screw mount on a foot/collar. But when I had my old 80-200 push pull, which had no collar, I did swing it from the BR attached to my old D90! It was scary the first time, but have done it many times and thankfully no problems.

I would have thought it safer to use a single connection to a strap mount which is designed to take weight than a single connection to a a tripod mount, which I don't think is designed to take weight?
 
There's a reason they give 2 strap connections on dslrs though, so you balance it out using both.
 
You could also argue that there's a reason there's strap connectors in the first place, as opposed to the tripod mount lol

I should probably add that I reckon the tripod mount is probably more than capable, although do we really know if any damage is being done? I've been looking at BR etc for a while now but just not 100% sure. There was another thread kicking about a while ago where there were mixed opinions, but I wish I could find some more info on the camera lugs and just how much they can take compared to the tripod mount etc.

I've seen the youtube videos of cars being pulled etc by the camera mount but God knows what damage could have been done internally! lol

People have been hanging camera from tripods upside-down for years. Especially for macro. Or carrying tripods over the shoulder with the camera still attached.
 
i think its just a more comfortable use of the strap, when its round my neck after a whole day it kinda a pain whereas this is more like a bag in that its across my shoulders, I mean its a good use of the canon strap, obviously the black rapid is better just I'm making do with what I have now
 
Of course, if it's more comfy, and you're ok doing it, that's all that matters. I would keep a hand on the body at all times when walking though!

especially if using a grip!Steve (Bristolian) had a grip on his camera and a black rapid and the grip came away,no fault of the strap just a weakness in the connection of the grip.Luckily he had his hand on it.

I am sure I saw a video from someone that made something like that mate,will see if I can find it
 
Nice one! I recall there was someone who made a fail safe for the black rapid or similar type, but i think it works with that because it doesn't have to cross over the back of the camera.
