hi guys
i`m looking into the sigma 120-400mm lens and have found it for £599 from digitalrev, iv also found it from park cameras for £675

now my question is, would you buy the uk lens with 3 year warranty or the jap lens with 1 years warranty after looking at the price difference ?

do lenes go wrong that much or is it like tv`s if its ok after 6months it should be good for years

lens usually don't break often but some alot their lens because they don't like the sharpness or focus etc.

£599 from digitalrev include delivery? it may add up as well. I know digitalrev item all include uk VAT etc so no custom need to deal with.

OSD also offer a 7 year warranty on the lens for £10 which might be worth having (depending on the T&C's)
 
I'd say go UK and even then I would not buy a Sigma lens unless it had been on my camera and I was satisfied with the performance.

My experience of Sigma is that their quality control is abysmal and they seem unable to do anything about it despite publicly claiming they were sorting it.

So, for me it's the potential problems when new rather than the reliability that I see as the issue though both may be relevant- I have no long term experience of their reliability as I binned them from my collection:lol:I know you can get the lens sorted (though sometimes not in one attempt) under warranty but I never bought into the spend loads of time posting lenses back and forward.

If they get it right, they can of course perform extremely well and I wouldn't deny that. I just think peace of mind and potential for less hassle is worth that extra but it depends what you're comfortable with.

Sigma's don't actually break per se (apart from maybe some old issues caused by Sony mount screw drive models) anymore than other lenses but sometimes they need calibration on individual bodies...

Personally I've no issues with Sigma, my 70-200 HSM II is one of the very best telephotos I've used.

I had no issue with my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 MKII HSM as well. I don't agree with the statement that sigma lens break often.

Alot of people return their sigma lens simply because they just doesn't like the optic, sharpness, AF etc but that got nothing to do with the lens durability.

I also mention that altho digitalrev sell it cheaper but it may not include delivery as well so it may add up as well. With that price different i would get the UK stock or look used and get it even cheaper.

No. I dont think we need to go into graphs and pie charts :)

I'm only speaking from my own personal experiences and from the issues raised in general from the photography community.

If Sigma were *really* that bad in terms of actual breakdowns I doubt they'd be perhaps the leading 3rd party manufacturer as they arguably are!

hooray for reason rather than the "argh its a sigma, it'll disolve with use!!1111" hysteria.

seriously though as jim said some might need calibrating, but again i dont think they break more often than any other brand.
 
I decided to pay for a UK Sigma 150-500, to be on the safe side.

I did return it, I did get a better copy, I was happy I'd bought local. :thumbs:

I would buy a "grey" body, but lenses are a bit trickier IMO.
