I'm looking to get my first serious camera very soon but am undecided between Nikon and Canon. I currently use a Nikon and have grown very comfortable with the menu system and general controls, button placements etc etc, but with the currents prices of the 5d mark iiii(panamoz ~2k) and the Nikon d800 and the fact that the Nikon at 36mp I overkill for my needs I'm leaning heavily towards the Canon. Luckily I don't have a expensive collection of Nikon lens which doesn't really tie me to the Nikon system. So what would you do? Any input from those that swapped from Nikon to canon, how easy was it to get familiar with the control/menus?

Also does Canon have the equivalent to the 'trinity' and how do the costs of lens compare between the two? 70-200mm 2.8?

You mention the D800 is overkill at 36Mp for your needs... so why not any of the other from the Nikon lineup, or Canon for that matter? Is it just a case of you wanting the latest released camera?

D3s for example is about as serious as it gets (and without being a complete new boy in the shops). It would be my choice if I didn't already have a D3 :)

You could always just get better glass for your current camera. What gear do you have and what are you planning to shoot and what is your budget?

I'd prefer a brand new system, d3s are still around 2.5k+? I had been hankering after a D3s but seeing the 5d miii at 2k looks tempting

D3000 :-/, like I said looking to get a first proper camera. FF

Get a D700 and buy good glass or wait on the D600 which is rumoured to be 24MP. Don't make the mistake of spending a huge chunk on a camera and then put a mediocre lens on it.

I was thinking of d700 but no video. Have been looking at the rumoured specs for the d600, but any ideas of release date?
