I am going on a 12 day trip to India and want to travel light but don’t want to miss a shot……………not the first time somebody has been in this situation I bet;)
Anyway the trip consists of 3 days in Delhi and 9 days in Kashmir.
I am taking my Leica MM and two lenses 50mm and 21mm (Black and white street photography covered)
I also have at home a D3s and a D600 so plan to take one of those bodies………90% sure D600 because its light
I am planning on buying a Nikon 24mm f1.4 before I go for fast action shots while on a lake in Kashmir, and possibly take one more lens the 70/200mm for anything long.
Anyway below is the other Nikon lenses that I have and could take if needed but remember I want to go as light as possible, so do you think I am covered with what I have above?

Sorry if this sounds negative but I find it strange that you've invested such a considerable amount of cash in your kit yet don't seem to know why?

I may be completely wrong but I'd have thought the best person to know what kit to take would be yourself as you'll be the one carrying it around.

Your correct you do sound negitive:)
The above list is what I plan to take............kind of made my mind up on that. I was just asking if I might have missed something i.e. maybe a prime zoom rather than the 24mm 1.4 or something to the words like that.

If it helps at all...

Travelling light in central Asia I took my GF1+20mm f1.7 and LX5. Another time I took my 5D+50mm f1.4 and LX5. On each occasion the larger chip camera was for use when quality really mattered and in low light and the LX5 was for more casual use and when I wanted a wider or longer shot.
 
Hay Alan GF1.........is that Canon, the 5D is right.
I too want to go light as possible but I dont want to spend a bunch of money to get to India and then keep saying everyday.............ohh I wish I had this lenes or that lenes, saying that if I took the whole bag I would still bitch:)
Anyway you mentioned that on the second trip you just took a 50mm, how did that work out as far as missing shots etc
 
Not sure if it will help or not but here goes ....

The 70-200 is quite heavy (stunning lens but ...) and as you have said you want to go light maybe the 70-300mm VR would be a good option or even the 70-200 F4 VR? Just a thought ....

The GF1 is a Panasonic Micro Four Thirds. If you're interested you should be able to pick one up dirt cheap these days. They're good for ISO 1600 in low light if you shoot RAW and process with modern software.

When I took my 5D I also took my LX5. It gives good IQ at low ISO's but IMVHO it's rubbish if you wind the ISO up. I found the 5D+50mm ok, it was great for night fishing shots at f1.4 and ISO 3200 and gave the quality I wanted too.

My version of traveling light would be my D700 with 70-300VR attached for 90% of the time and depending on where I'm going I'd take maybe a 35mm f/2 prime for a wider (or maybe my 16-35 but that is quite heavy). I really like the 70-300 range on FF, 70 is just about wide enough to be normal and 300 is a nice amount of tele for isolating subjects in landscape.

I am considering replacing the 70-300VR with a 70-200 f/4 for sharper corners (not that the 70-300 is particularly bad) but not made that jump yet.
 
I love India and the opportunity that photographing its people allows, my last two trips I took my D700 and old 35-70 f2.8. I seldom struggled to get close enough for portraits but often lacked a bit of width, hence I've just picked up a 24-70 f2.8, I'd be loath not to travel without it now. On the narrow streets etc its not always possible to take a step back hence the 24mm, it's also very busy in the markets etc so I wouldn't want to chuff about changing lenses. I'd love a 24mm f1.4 though so I'm sure I could struggle along with that! It would have to be the 24-70 for me from the lenses you list and a pocketful of 10 rupee notes!
 
2 lens kit for FF Nikon? 24-70 and 70-300 VR.
