if you talk about brand new nikon cameras that you can buy then D90, D7000, D300(s), D700, D3, D3x, D3s, D4

Canon lenses all have motors within them, so they'll work on any Canon bodies. The EF-S lenses are for 1.6x crop sensor cameras only though (1000D, 600D, 7D etc.).

The D3100 have a newer sensor etc so camera like D80 might dissappoint you if you pixel peep but the D80 have in build motor etc.
To behonest you gonna buy something that have inbuild motor and better than your D3100 then consider all those option i mention before.
Get a used D90 if you on a budget or a used D300 and you will be happy.

you got to define what is better thought. D3100 has the same sensor as the D7000 so they will take similar picture in the same condition.

No it doesn't, the D5100 does though.

Its nothing to do with budget as if i decided to change it would be my D3100 and one of my lenses (or both if i switched to Canon) going up for sale and me buying what i fancy off the list
The D7000 does seem very interesting, its the extra flexibility of lenses i am after but not a definate as yet, just curious as it is not something i considered when buying :bonk:

All depend do you want to stat Dx or go FF?
if without budget then certainly wait to next month and buy a D4 instead ....... or get a D700 or whatever .........
Those certainly better then the D3100 no doubt.
Except the body motor what else your D3100 is lacking? What type of stuff you like to shoot etc? That would help us narror down what camera we can advice you.
If budget is not a problem and jsut want something that have body motor and better then the D3100 then pretty much all FF body will do for you.
