Off on a road trip to Germany in a couple of weeks, rather than the normal dash through Belgium (excluding the normal crawl round the Brussels ring road) we plan to stop off in Bruges.

I've never been and it looks like an interesting place, with a fair few photographic opportunities. Will probably arrive mid afternoon, stay overnight and depart mid morning the following day. May be meeting someone there with some local knowledge for the evenings entertainment.

Does anybody have any suggestions, either for subject or for watering holes, eateries or cheap passable accommodation?

The centre of Bruges has numerous places to drink & eat, all that I have tried have been great, the ones in the main square are a bit more expensive. Try Marc Chagall in St Amandsstraat for a start, just off the main square.
We have stayed in 2 hotels, Hotel Bryghia &Ter Brughe, not sure how much they cost now though, both quite near the main square.
Once again you are spoiled for photographic opportunities, one cliché shot is the main tower, lit up at night, with its reflection in the canal. I think that it is taken from Rozenhoedkaai !

Awesome place - it really is a Fairy-Tale City...

Bruges is a great place, loads of places for photos.

The main square and tower, loads of canals, churches/cathedrals, monastries etc...
Plenty of people for street photos...
Take the bus tour from the main square, takes you all over the city to get your bearings...
Also take a boat trip around the canals...

Found it quite expensive for food and accomodation, stayed there last year, one street back from main square £120 per night for 1 twin room.

You have to take the classic shot as above... think i have a few from the same place...

and dont forget the belgium chocolate shops...:naughty::naughty::naughty:

Wow guys, thanks for the replies, I'm looking forward to it even more now ;)

Bruges is great for a short stay. Lots of photo opportunities, more than you will be able to handle. Food and drink is abundant, and resonably priced. You must try frites and mayonnaise from the van in the main square. Sounds revolting, but it's quite good.

One of the best things about Bruges....

No bloody street sign clutter everywhere....

Are they as good as the ones from the van at the bottom of Eau Rouge at Spa used to be before they put that ****** fence up :D

Thanks again for all the suggestions everyone.

If you're after Fairy Tail, you're better off in Brighton, aren't you?
