Edit My Images
Yes
Hey up...

im determined to find out what evey single thing in my camera does, some are obvious to me, and some not so!...

Olympus E1 [but i guess most / all cameras have this] i have a function 'RAW edit data' if i open a RAW shot in camera i can 'process' it, i then get another copy of the same image in the camera which looks slightly different.

I cant find any setting etc to alter this new image. Whats the funciton of it and use when taking shots? im guesisng its the jpeg image as the camera was set up [WB, exposure etc]?

many thanks in advance for casting come light on this! :)

cheers

bob :)

Actually I'm not sure that all/most cameras do have a 'RAW edit' function. Certainly I haven't come across it on any of the Canons I've owned, but perhaps I'm not reading the manual all the way through.

My best guess at what it does is apply some basic settings to the RAW data to show you what a jpg image would look like.

With Canons you can apply 'picture styles' when taking jpg images, adjusting things like contrast, sharpening and saturation to affect how the image will appear straight out of camera.

As these picture styles are not applied to RAW images (well not in camera at least) I am assuming that this is what the RAW edit does in your Olympus.

Of course I could be completely wrong and barking up the wrong tree entirely.

Hi Scarecrow...

cheers for your suggestion! it sounds how i thought it may be... but doesnt that defeat the object of shooting in RAW! there may be a reason why canon havent picked up on it! :0

think i will pass over that function... dont think it will help me take better photos! :0

cheers

Have you checked the manual?

In the manual it says....

"Performs image processing (such as white balance and sharpening) on images in the RAW data format, then converts the data to TIFF or jpg format for saving to the card."

I had a quick play but couldn't get it to create a TIFF or jpg but I didn't look into it to try and work it out.

I have used the feature on my E3 a handful of times. Typically when I am away from home and someone wants a copy of a pic I have taken. Most people don't have the ability to process a raw on their computer so I use that feature to create a jpg and then I can copy and view it on their computer there & then.

As these picture styles are not applied to RAW images (well not in camera at least) I am assuming that this is what the RAW edit does in your Olympus.

The picture styles and other settings such as white balance are 'attached' to the RAW image so they can be read by DPP.

I know that, but my response was given in context of the OP's question in respect of RAW images being edited and displayed in camera, which Canon doesn't do.

Many thanks for your help guys :) im my eyes the only real use for it will be as Almost invisable says for passing over RAW images as a jped to friend... dont suppose it will be used often but very handy to know! :) you watch, i will need it this weekend! :)

OK my guess is this..........

Camera will take a RAW image, but if you have selected JPeg only the only file that will be saved is the JPEG which is what your camera thinks the pic should be.

If you shoot RAW or RAW+ (the latter meaning 2 files saved, 1 the Raw file or digital negative, the other being the JPeg i.e. cameras interpretation of the image)

so with In camera RAW editing, you can play around with limited things that you could probably do a shedload more of in Photoshop or Elements..... prob change exposure / white balance etc, so can correct cock ups, but i am guessing not manipulate as you can in fully dedicated software programmes.

Also, given you are probably looking at a 3" 1m dot screen at best, chances of getting much worthwhile from it are somewhat limited........

As said though, can potentially help rescue a cock up at worst!
