Bought this lens a couple of weeks ago from a tp member and have been very impressed with it. It is super sharp and the portraits i have had whilst just messing about have been brilliant. My macro shots are garbage as i don't have a decent tripod and seem to have about half of my critters in focus and the other half out of focus but it's fun learning all the same.

Glad you're enjoying the lens. If you can, try and get hold of a Tamron 90mm if you like macro & portrait shots....

I use the Siggy 105 macro, and whilst I personally preferred the Canon 100mm macro it does take some great pictures.

For macro shots I rarely use a tripod, I select the magnification and then just rock back and forward until I feel it is in focus before pushing the button. I bought an old cheap ringflash on ebay and use that for lighting.
