I am wondering about the purchase of an IR modded camera. For me would be a Canon, perhaps 20D or something of that ilk. I fancy it as I love the IR pics and I also think it will be more useful for the astrophotography I am planning on playing with come my retirement in March.

So, I am asking for those of you with the IR modded cameras, what are your thoughts, hints and tips really.

I haven't got one, though sometimes I think about one and don't have the spare readies at present. I've tried with a screw-on IR filter in the past but haven't helped myself by usually not having a tripod with me a the time. Having read about modded camreas, I think I'm right in saying that l-o-n-g exposures aren't necessary.

I'm not sure how much use I'd make of one but I suppose if a 10D came along at the right price an online impulse purchase could occur. Here's a link:

I had a Canon 350D modified a year ago. I had it done at ACS (link above). The service was excellent. There are 3 types of mod you can have including a full spectrum 'colour' ir filter but that'll set you back around £550.
I went for the full IR mod which came in at £365. I've used it for a few projects now.

ACS were the only company that offered the full range of mods and were great with advice as well.

hehe, if I were into landscape and that kinda thing I would love an IR converted camera, lovely images - hope you win!

A good but cheap alternative is the Minolta Dimage 7.

Check the ir images and exif on Daniella Theoret's site taken with a Minolta dimage 7 which can be bought on ebay for much less than the cost of conversion of the D40. No shooting blind as you can compose through vf or rear display and shot hand held ir out of the box with an r72 planted on front.

I don't have it now but I seem to recall that the Panasonic FZ18 sensor could cope with infrared. Maybe someone here could confirm that. Obviously it's a bridge camera and not a dslr but if we're straying into IR on a budget?

Well there's a coincidence. I've just been reading an article in Photo Pro Mag about Lovegrove and this very same 10D, with a few examples of his work. He says a 10D is a good candidate for conversion and the resolution is more than enough. I've got a converted 20D but I've yet to find the time to put serious effort in to processing the results. Hoping to have a go over Christmas when the family are watching crap tv.

Sara, you would do well to be cheeky to Mr Lovegrove and ask him if you could have a copy of his PS action that created the examples in the mag. They really are good. And if he let's you have it......... :naughty:

Today the 10D turned up - Looks in great nick - Also a book arrived in the post that I have ordered on IR photography - Just need some daylight now - Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark is not good for my first play!!

Can't wait - Really excited
