Not an amazing shot - but not one I could have got with a macro lens (it was far out of reach).

Both Taken with a 500mm prime, like yourself I could not get close enough to use a macro lens, even when I had one on a a spare body over my shoulder !
I took photos of the same butterfly with a macro lens and a 150-600mm lens I think the quality is the same - although probably not with smaller creatures
