I had the pleasure of going to the circus today, took my camera in, but with all the dim lighting and what was lit was lit , red, blue, green depending on what was happening

Didn't want to use flash, as it could distract the artist, so banged up the ISO Hi1 or 2 and put the camera in P setting which is supposed to be better than auto, I also put it in multiple photo setting hopping the multiple photos would end up with something as the lights flashing changing colour,

Only have Nikon d3100, standard on camera flash and opted for 18-55mm due to sitting ringside

Can't post any photos as I'm still away, but wondered what settings I should have used should I venture somewhere similar:shrug:

I wouldn't have used the HI settings. You will find the images will be horrifically grainy and maybe unusable. The highest I would have gone is 6400 at the most. Preferably 1600 or 3200.
I would have used aperture priority and the lowest aperture I could. On your lens that will be f/3.5 or f/5.6 depending on the focal length you are using.

P mode is only any good if you know what settings it's using and you change accordingly to the situation. You may have been better on full auto, although that would try to raise the flash.

I wouldn't have shot at hi either. Probably would have auto iso limited at 3200 or 6400 in manual and shot wide open with the slowest shutter speed i could get away with.

Really shoud have a look at what I got, but haven't had time too yet

I think they'll be holiday snaps though, if that, dark arena, fast motion, slowish shutter speeds meant a lot of action was blurred out

I'm off to the circus tomorrow and can't make up my mind if to take my camera. Could take my 35mm 1.8 but I'm a bit reluctant as a friend has told me to take my waterproofs if I'm ringside.

You don't happen to be in my neck of the woods? Paignton?

No, mine was Filey, only had one clown and one lot of spray of water, rest was fine

Looking at my camera tonight, not only have I found the auto ISO setting:shrug: but looking at the photos they are iso6300, which is strange as my D3100 goes from 3200 to HI1, HI2, nothing been caught which is worth working on, been added to the holiday snaps folder
