Installing Gentoo Linux on an old PC

I'm nearly there, all disks prepped, stages downloaded, now i'm on the horrible bit, waiting for the kernel to compile

update, since my epic hardware fail, that hosed Gentoo.
I've fired up my old P3 coppermine 1GHz running a stripped out version of ubuntu, CLI only

Only if you're on a Debian based Linux . Gentoo uses Portage.

I know - the "stripped out version of ubuntu" comment is what triggered my reference to apt-get.

We have a gentoo server but I'm less familiar with emerge, so I let someone else look after that one.
