Hi, after speaking to my insurance company i have been adviced to take it to a canon dealer and get a quote and conformation of the chipped lens and the possible cause ,in order to make a claim ,the guy in the local shop this morning basicaly told me (without seeing the damage) that it would be just as cheap to replace the lens than have it returned and repaired at canon....with it being a prime ....Could any one please advice how this would work with my old lens if it was to be replaced..Thank you

I think you missed out about 99% of the story?

But, guessing about the bits you haven't told us.. get a written quote from the dealer (is he a Canon authorised dealer or not? - you don't say) saying that the lens is beyond economic repair, and then submit that report to the insurance company.

But.. deep breaths.. and start at the beginning.. ..

Thanks Heather.. but why this warrants a whole new thread then is beyond me. And the OP doesn't seem to have determined whether or not the scratch affects the image quality.

Is this a household contents claim? if so, will a no claims discount be lost and how much will this cost over the time it takes to earn it back?

If the "local shop" isn't a Canon authorised dealer, then the OP definitely needs to get the lens to one.

The camera shop is a canon authorised dealer,.....my insurance company called me back and told me to get the quote on a repair/replacement based on the advise from the dealer who said being a prime it would be more cost effective to directly replace ......i have never claimed on my insurance in over 20 years and my insurance company have told me i have cover for what as happened ,all i wanted to know was the best way to go about it , with me being covered and paying my premium to get a replacement would be worth it as i can get one claim in three years without it affecting my premiums ....i started a new thread because i was aiming for a totaly different response from my earlier thread ....no other reason and i am not a street wise when it come to dealing with insurance issues ......

Presumably this is your Canon 400L 5.6? Being a prime has nothing to do with anything, it's a £1k lens and a new front element will not cost anything near that. Phone Canon Elstree and ask for an estimate - they do fixed price repairs and that may be all you need. Or they'll advise you to send it for estimate.

I wouldn't bother your dealer. All they can do is contact Canon on your behalf - they'll just be a middle-man, probably adding confusion.

How did you manage to scratch it? Did you have the lens hood fitted? Very hard to damage the front if that's on, as it always should be. Very easy if you don't.

Thanks for the reply , i think i will give canon a call,as for how it happened i dont know but i do know it happened yesterday and i was knelt in a verge lens pointing in a field ,cars were pasing at speed and it was rather windy ,maybe a small loose stone ......
