Insurance Claim

So.. my 24-70mm got smashed up today :bang:, Im just getting round to sorting out the paperwork to send off for a claim.

I have noticed that there is a section to include a quote for repair, but I'm unsure whether to send off the lens for a repair quote or to not bother as I believe I have read somewhere before that repairing / replacing the front glass is generally very uneconomical.

Ive not gone over the lens with a fine comb, but the most noticable damage are the deep scratches in the glass, the zoom barrel extension (what ever its proper name is) wobbles a fair bit now and the filter thread has pretty much been sheared off. For a cheaper lens I imagine it would be pointless getting a quote for the repair, but as its a more expensive lens I cannot help but wonder if it may be deemed as economical even if it costs the vast majority of the value of the lens.

Opinions? Send it off for a repair quote then send the claim or just send the claim? I suppose they can always request that I send it off for a quote at a later date.

Oh and I would call the insurers but they are closed now and I was hoping to get the forms in the mail tomorrow :)

I think it would be best to ring the insurers and ask them what they require. They may ask you to get quotes for repair or send someone round to see it. Only they will know what they want you to do.
Oh, and you can't rush insurance companies........

Definitely worth ringing the insurance company and finding out if it's necessary to get quotes, or what to do with the lens. Once they've paid out it's legally their property, so make sure you find out what they want done with it.
As a side note, what company are you insured with. Is it a household insurance or a specialist photographic insurance, only interested as I'm with Photoguard, but never had to claim so I don't know how good they are.

Im with photoguard, so it will be interesting to see how the claim is handled as Ive noticed alot of people have been asking what they are like when it comes to a claim.

Watching this one, fingers crossed the claim goes smoothly. I'm with Photoguard and have never claimed, would be great if they get it sorted sharpish

I had a claim on a lens a couple of years ago. I sent it to Nikon for the quote. Came through quickly and the insurance company accepted it immediately. I had the cheque in my hand within 5 days.

Kev.

DON'T assume that it won't be economically repairable.

Care to guess how much this cost to fix?
(It's a 24mm f/2.4 L, in case you didn't recognise it.)

£288+VAT. Bargain.

I agree. I had a lens that was smashed to pieces as still it was quoted as repairable, at 90% the price of the new one!!! I obviously chose to buy a new one instead ...

Hi,

I was with photoguard. They are pretty good and fairly quick at sorting it out.

Send them the form. They have repairers they use that will assess and let them know. photoguard in turn will let you know.

My camera Plus tokina 11-16mm (fav) lens jumped out of my bag to the concrete platform and ruined a few days. Luckily the lens glass was ok, just the focus and front surround was broken.

Photoguard arranged for the lens to be picked up (even sent me a box n packaging) got the repairer to quote. Unfortunately for me, there was a small piece required and due to Thailand area flooding, wasn't immediately available. So they said they could either give me the dosh for the repair towards a new lens or I wait for the repair. As the repair was half the lens price I opted for waiting. Took a month but when it came back it was a good as new.

Only reason I am not with them now is they change the terms n conditions and it looks to vague to be good. Currently with Towergate. And I hope not to need to call them :D

Hope yours goes ok
