Hi all. I really hope that you will be able to help me with my current situation.

At the moment I have a lot of expensive camera equipment here with me in my university halls of residence, and I think it is time for me to get some insurance sorted. I will state the criteria that need to be met, and hopefully people will be able to help me find the best insurance company, which has some positive reviews from members on here!

The policy needs to have the following:

1) needs to be able to cover me in my halls of residence (in Birmingham), and next year and the year after in student housing, at different addresses. Basically a policy with ease of address change, or coverage wherever in the UK. It would also need to be covered at my home in London during non-term time.

2) needs to cover for theft and accidental damage

3) needs to be competively priced to be affordable on my student budget

4) needs to be easy to add new gear to

5) easy to claim on, and quick to replace the gear

6) easy to contact them with good customer services

7) quick activation of policy

optional things that I would appreciate if they were added onto it:

1) cover for the equipment in my car

2) immediate activation of the insurance policy

Sorry for the post, but hopefully it will help me sort out my current worry about my camera equipment!

Thanks all,
Alex

Your best bet is to talk to the specialist brokers. Try Photoguard and Aaduki.

You'll need to clarify what and when with regards to car insurance. Aaduki normally have a 9PM curfew on gear in car if it's not in transit, but you can get a waiver for this, to whilst on assignment

Also have a word with your domestic insurance company and see what they offer.

Both the ones I've mentioned above work very quickly, Photoguard can do everything via the web. Aaduki, are almost as quick.

But you'll need to do a bit of research to get the best deal/cover

Try E&L we are with them and all our gear was covered from the minute we signed and its only a few quid a week for 7k insurance

ING Direct cover mine, for loss, theft and accidental damage in and away from property.

Well worth giving them a ring and see what they say

We use Imaging Insurance for our cover and they seem to be pretty good. They're very flexible and have been very easy to deal with regarding claims.

Your requirement about the car might need to be re-thought, though. Many insurers will only cover gear in an unoccupied car if it is in a locked boot which is not accessible from the passenger compartment. Not many cars meet that requirement these days. (Fortunately one of ours does, but that's a complete coincidence.)

To pick up on Stewarts comments. Look at the T&C very carefully. If you find something you don't like query it with the company and you can sometimes get a waiver. I did with Aaduki, and got the boot requirement changes to be a cover over the boot area ( as with a 4x4 ) and got the 9pm curfew changed.

If you don't get what you want look elsewhere
