Hey everyone,

I'm sure some have been annoyed by the price hikes and others glad that they have already bought other bits of gear however there is something else to consider. I had a quick look on camerapricebuster today and was astonished by how the price on literally everything has gone up. I decided to quickly flick back to my insurance policy and found out that everything I had was undervalued. I didn't think this was going to happen since I always overvalue my gear slightly but even with that mine was well out. I've just had to check everything all over again and in some cases add serial numbers (needed for any kit that's crept over the £250 mark). It ended up costing me £25 extra which I'm a little annoyed about but at least if my gear gets stolen I will have it all covered.

I advise everyone to have a look at their policy to make sure their gear is all covered, you may be in for a shock!

Why the sudden price hike?

Camera manufacturers raised the prices due to the poor exchange rate. I think you will find there are quite a few topics about it :D.

I'll second this. My son James has just got into photography so I bought him a 400D, which turns out to be a godsend now my 40D is away foe repair.

Anyhow, Friday he did a presentation at scouts for his photography badge and we listed the cost of the lenses he could use. Shocked to see the prices lenses have risen. Most of mine have jumped by £200 or more.

That's one of the reasons why I don't insure with a sepcialist insurer. My home contents insurance gives me £5,000 personal posession cover with a single article limit of £2,500. Okay, so my 200mm f:2 is now over the £2,500 mark, but I'll just stump up the extra if anything happened to it, afterall the cost of specifying it on my policy would eventually add up to more than I'd have to pay to make up the difference.

agreed my household insurance is great

after i dropped a lens i didnt realise i was covered.gave a call they paid up prompt.i got a new lens based on jessops prices which is good as they are high.

they then went through my policy with me and i paid a little more as i hadnt realy added up what my camera gear was worth.also took outside the house cover as ime out at night quite a bit.

its good for peace of mind

Nikon prices are going up again March too!

Ah, bummer. Hopefully they won't go up by too much. I calculate the value by putting in the most expensive price I can find listed on camerapricebuster, it's not the most accurate way no doubt but hopefully it will do me proud. If not I can see myself bumping the price up again in not too long. Thanks for the heads up .

I posted that very point a week or so ago on the equipment forum. Insurance needs to be reassessed in the light of these price rises or companies may not pay out.

Should have been in my post above, sorry

My insurance is running out this week (with photoguard), I'm thinking about changing as I've heard mixed things about them. Can anyone recommend a new insurer or should i stick with them?
I've heard Imaging Insurance are quite good, anyone with them?
