Having upgraded my camera to a 50D and upgraded some lenses including buying my first L series I am at a point where my house insurance no longer provides sufficient cover for items while away from home.
Can anyone recomend a decent company that provides insurance for camera equipment.

John.

Hi John

Probably an obvious question, but have you looked at increasing your cover on your home insurance for when you are out and about ? Could be cheaper than a seperate policy ...

Thanks I checked the house insurance which was almost doubling the premium for the camera gear. Just curious about specialist camera insurance in case there is cover they supply that house cover won't eg: theft from your car etc.

I know what you mean. Nearly had a heart attack when I totaled up my kit. I went to www.eandl.co.uk/camera-insurance for mine. Less than £80 for up to £4000 value. Certainly put my mind at rest.

I dont want to disturb your mental peace but E&L were absolutely useless when I had a claim with them - their loss adjuster looked for every loophole and teenyprint possible and they wound up paying a fraction of what the kit was worth.

then they failed to cancel the policy when instructed and took months to give me the money had taken in error back. (also note that their by the month charges are misleading because they charge on lunar months so its 13 per year)

These days my gear is covered at home and for personal use by my direct line house insurance and I go to a broker for proffesional cover

Be aware also that most insurance (both house, car, and specialist camera) doesnt cover theft of gear in a car if its either in the passenger compartment or if the boot can be accessed from the passenger compartment (which rules out all hatchbacks and estates asnd some saloons)

Thanks for the replies, I also breed dogs and have heard poor reports regarding pet insurance with them also but thanks for taking the time to reply. I will check out photoguard.

Use Pet Plan for dog insurance, I own a boarding kennels as well as having my own dogs and Pet Plan is fantastic, believe me.

Just though i would post to say E&L insurance are rubbish. I had my horse insured with them and when i made a claim they took nearly 6 months to pay out!!

Im also after insurance for my kit, will take a look at photoguard & anther thread suggested Cliik.

Try Aaduki. They specialise.

Interestingly I was until recently with aaduki but when I initially raised some queries with them about their policy terms I got answers from someone at E&L

I'm with Aaduki but am now concerned reading this and hearing horror stories about E and L.
I really hope I don't have to claim and judging on others recommendations may be looking for another insurer when it's up for renewal.

One thing that bugs me about e&l and Aaduki is there excesses. I've mentioned this in another thread but e&l state on their website that their excess is 7.5% of the loss or 12.5% if its stolen from an unattended car, with minimums of £150 & £250 respectively. Now you lose £5k which is quite easy these days, bag with 1 body, 2 lenses, flash and you could be there, and thats £375 with e&l or £625 if it was nicked from your car while you were away from it.

Aaduki also have a raised excess for stuff stolen from unattended vehicles and so do Towergate.

My bug bear is that when I was shopping round for quotes neither of them told me about that. That to me would be something I'd consider to be a point that could sway a deal. If I saved £20 by going to them, and then had to claim I could end up more out of pocket than the £20 I saved.

I placed my insurance with Steve Beveridge at Cliik. Mate of mine knew Steve from before and suggested i give him a call. He alerted me to these excess rises, something I'd never looked at before. His quote was a couple of quid dearer but I got some extras the others didn't give but at least I knew that if I did claim there weren't any nasty suprises waiting!

+1 for cliik.
