Insurance

If you have household contents insurance try that: 'personal possessions away from home'.

Eversure looks good. Not sure how I'd verify ownership of used equipment though, as not all has box/literature. Sent them an email to check.

That is a good point about used equipment as the majority of mine is 2nd hand

i will also be looking at insurance but also like to find out about 2nd hand.

i was looking at above and this: Theft from an unattended vehicle unless the vehicle is secure, locked and keys removed and the insured item is in a locked luggage compartment

i assume locked luggage compartment means the boot? if not what

(All accessible windows must be fitted with key operated window locks) my home doesnt have key epoerated window locks either

Locked luggage compartment could be a glovebox if it locks.

£10K worth of all risks on my John Lewis household policy costs me £43/year. Seems a fair price.

It's not really 'all risks' as there are limits and camera equipment seems to be £2000 unless stated otherwise.

ie; get all your camera gear nicked from your locked car in broad daylight and the limited payout is £2000

I will check that on the policy document as clearly advised them it was camera kit, although there is no specific mention on the schedule. Then again I never leave all my kit in the car.

I used to have additional cover on my home insurance for my kit, but they too had a single item limit of £2k, but with £12k worth of additional cover.
So, if my 1DX and a couple of lenses would be nicked, then the limit on the body would be £2k, but would be fine with the lenses as they aren't really worth over £2k individually.
Before I had the 1DX, I had cover for my MKIII but hardly really used it outside for about 18-24 months so stopped the additional cover, but as I want to get back into it in a big way with the 1DX I will need to look into this again, just need to find out if my current home contents insurers have the same single item limit, if they do then I will need to go specialised.

Similar problem as noted above though, as I bought this camera as used, so its difficult to prove ownership, has anyone overcome this themselves?

In that case you 'specify' the items which are over the default single item limit.

Tried that, but the payout limit was still £2k, asked them to specifically cover my camera for total replacement cost and they said it was limited, can't remember which firm it was now, but will be checking with the ones I'm with now

See they say it's only for amateur/semi pro i.e. earning less than 50% of income so fits a lot of people. Bit concerned about their excesses though

http://www.eversure.com/camera/benefits.aspx#tab1

According to that, if you have/are lucky enough to own say £10k and that gets stolen, if its from your house your excess is £500, from your car while you're not with it and it's £1000! Always amazes me people will take time to scout around for insurance and then neglect to see what the excess would be in the event of a claim. Heard a mate say he saved £30, but when he went and made a claim found out his excess was £250 not the £150 he was led to believe. Hence not happy as effectively £70 out of pocket!

Also, no claim if you can't prove ownership of an item or its not on the scheduled list (unless in the unspecified kit sum insured). I have some kit that falls into that category, no proof. My insurers just said take photos of the item and store it and that'll be proof as and when needed. Or if its a lens or body they can look at the raw data from photos taken by the item and accept that as proof.

I use Cliik by the way as full time tog now. Excess is £150 whatever the claim.

Just my 2p worth! :)

JLPolicy is £5K limit if stolen from a car, £100 excess, doesn't say if that is per claim or per item. I have their Premier cover which is unlimited contents/buildings cover

So you have your house and contents insured for £43per year? Sounds a great deal

Cliik, very good service, a named account manager who I can email / text if necessary, personal service (eg I let them know when I am going abroad, I emailed Steve from the airport and got a reply 2 mins later saying noted, have a good trip).

This is the biggest problem with them, this Steve guy is the only one allowed to quote/deal you, no-one else can do this so if he is not available what happens?

No. That's the bit that covers the all risks personal possession part. 10k for 43/year.
