Yes
I am going to Egypt in 2 weeks and I am thinking about insuring my camera not just for Egypt but in general after I get back too.

Will the camera be involved in my travel insurance?

Can anyone recommend any good camera insurance sites?

I don't know what your policy covers. Have you aked the Insurer?

I've just gone through a similar exercise as my camera bag has seemed to become rather expensive to replace should the worst happen! :D

I asked for a quote for £6,000 worth of gear (god it's expensive to take photo's nowadays!!) non-professional use from Towergate - they quoted me £212 + £12.50 policy fee for up to £7,500 worth of kit inc. 45 days foreign travel. :bonk:

Thinking that was rather expensive, I spoke with my home insurance company (Axa), who offer a better level of cover - total cost for an extra £6,000 cover for non-specific personal valuables on a new-for-old basis - £16 for the year! Bargain!!

Home insurance has to be a must when getting quotes.

check your home contents policy for items outside the home and limits
you can do endorsements for specific items up to their value..i put all my musical instruments on this...all risks..world wide
it wasnt too much...something like £7.50 per £1000

If you dont have much gear then I would have thought home insurance would be the cheapest option. most home insurance would be around £500 minimum for an item but beware, when I was looking for insurance the 'item' being covered was all of my camera gear ie body and lens would not be classed as seperate items which would lead to it being next to useless if you lost your bag!

As for individual camera insurance, I am sooo glad I got it, am in the middle of getting both my 20d and 40 repaired after a mishap at home. I am with Glover and Howe and cannot express how easy the claim has been (so far) I am at the stage of repair so just waiting for their cheque to come through to pay for the repairs. this covers me away from home anywhere in the world for up to 60 days at a time and is covered for accidental, loss etc etc.

Home insurance...

Most will cover an amount away from the home

With no single item above 1500

I got 2500 worth of cover and it cost about £30 extra

Good luck

Check single item value as most have a limit for this.

Wholeheartedly recommend putting it on your household insurance ( assuming you have a household of course to state the obvious) I'm with Aviva and it was no problem. Don't even need to specify articles under £1500 each. Had to add a new 300/f2.8 at nearly £4k, and it cost about £25 for the year. merv:clap:

I'm pretty sure it's £2500 - none of my lenses are that expensive, so not a worry for me. If I do get some more expensive ones in the future, I can always put it down as a specified item with a specific value
