Insuring your camera / equipment

Hi guys,

since my house insurance specifically doesn't cover cameras / photography equipment, I'm thinking as the value of equipment I have increases that I should look into some kind of insurance for my kit.

Are there any specific insurers for this kind of thing or do you just contact your regular insurers to get a quote?

Any advice would be appreciated as I'd hate to have to buy all my kit again from scratch if it was lost / damaged / stolen!

Glover and Howe. Been with them three years. Claimed once, pretty straightforward. Google photographic insurers for others.

I have myhouse contents with More Than, I increased the policy to cover individual equipment and the price was verygood, I would talk to your house contents insurers first [if you have one!]

Cliik - Cheaper and better cover than photoguard.

Your house insurance will not cover professional use if you plan to do any and will be very expensive to cover kit in a car.

Steve at Cliik is well recommended by many here on TP.

And I'll recommend InFocus. Best T's & C's I could find for equipment in the car.

Go for Cliik. they are cheaper then all out there and seem very professional. I have just gone with them

Just for Info. I have heard good things about Cliik, and im currently with photoguard.

I just called Cliik and spoke to Steve, his quote blew my current insurance out of the water! Its cheaper, more cover, more covered!

a seriously happy bunny here! I will be calling photoguard and cancelling as soon as possible!

Mines all covered with my house insurance went through it over the phone twice with them to make sure it was all covered and have it in writing to confirm that. The premium only went up by about 5 quid for the year

Thats all well and good, but i cant imagine for 1 minute my house insurance would cover 5 mil public liability, 100,000 Professional Indemnity, 10K of Camera gear, 5k of computer gear plus various other things :)

And would your house insurance provide you with a replacement body or lens while said piece is getting repaired? They usually just replace things plus they'll take twice as long. All well and good if you're not in a hurry to get the item back, but if you've got a shoot lined up you need that lens/body for it, house insurance won't pick up the hire charges as part of the claim.

Just depends on what you use it for.
If you use the kit professionally you need seperate insurance as the house cover won't do. If you use the kit professionally you shouyld have public liability insurance which your house cover won't provide, you may if you use the kit professionally require professional indemnity covering you if something happens that you can't provide the service. When you use the kit professionally you're likely to need quite a bit of cover too which would cost much more than a fiver.

Just saying it all depends on your use of the kit - the right answer for insurance is different for everyone.

Must of missed the point that he needed it for work.

He asked for both sides of the table ones from people who have separate camera insurance via companies and others who use regular insurance companies just putting my circumstances down for him.

I've recently had a claim with photoguard, simple, straight forward and no fuss at all.

I will happily renew with them

Is Cliik for professionals only ? I don't need public liability etc as I'm strictly amateur. I need a policy that will cover my kit when on holiday, usually about 4 weeks a year.

Ask your house insurer

Yeah, I had a look at the Cliik one and it looked more for professionals whereas I'm not quite there yet!;)

If you do not use your kit professionally ask your home insurance company. They cover this fairly well (I used mine for a few years) - didn't have to claim. Cost was pretty low to add a few grands worth.
