Hi guys,

I'm looking to invest in a new lens but I really don't know what to go for!

I've currently got the standard lens that comes with the Canon EOS 550D and I can't help thinking it is holding me back with some things, like not being able to zoom in that far.

I'm really new to the game so have no idea what a lens can do besides zoom in. Do they affect how much of the subject you can see?

I'd really appreciate it if someone could advise me what to go for. I'm not looking to spend thousands, but could stretch to something fairly expensive if it's worth it.

Tamron 17-50/2.8 and use your feet.

The next decent zoom with reach would be the Sigma 70-200/2.8.

Don't waste money on the 70-300 variants.

I am a big lover of fast glass, once you tasted it, its hard to go back shooting F/4 or 5.6!

Sorry to sound thick but what do the numbers mean? Is it how far they can zoom in?

And where do you guys buy all your camera gear? Anywhere that is really good value and reliable?

seriously though i went almost the route he sugested and yes i like fast glass too!
 
The canon 70-200 F/4 isnt a bad choice either. The IS or non IS are both very good and will give you the extra reach you want. Pair it with the above tamron or the outstanding Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS and you have a formidable lens kit.
 
Are you sure you want a telephoto zoom lens? The majority of your photos on flickr are landscapes, you might be better off with a wide angle lens.

Without wishing to sound rude, can I suggest that you learn what the different numbers mean and how they influence the way the photo looks. Learn about what aperture, ISO and shutter speed first and then look at focal length and how it affects the photos you take. Knowing the basics and what you want to shoot will tell you what your next lens should be.
