intermittent Fault on 40D

I have started to get an intermittent fault on my 40D, when i have been taking pictures i sometimes can't get into the playback, i e i press the play button to view and it won't switch on to display mode, i also can't access the menu functions at this time, any experience of this anyone, or is off to be repaired, and if so does anyone know the best place local to Leeds to take it?

Never seen (or heard of) anything like that. Those are pretty basic things you're trying to do, so it's probably something simple and mechanical like the contacts under the buttons.

There are four authorised Canon repair centres: Canon themselves at Elstree, H Lehmann at Stoke, A J Johnston at Glasgow, and Colchester Cameras - none particularly near you. You might have to send it in to one of them. Call first to get an idea of costs and timescales.
