Internet Connection Problem

I've started to get a probem when my PC tells me that my network cable is unplugged so I can't connect very quickly followed by a message that the Local Area network is connected. However I ned to shut down the browser & restart to see any web pages once this happens & it's driving me mad :bang:

I've checked all the connections and they seem fine so any ideas where next to even start on this problem please.

I'm running Windows XP SP3 with Firefox 4 as my browser and Commodo as a Firewall. My Router is a Netgear DG 834G.

Check you are running the correct firmware on the router.

This may not resolve the issue but I had an similar issue with my netgear but the wireless part and a firm upgrade has made huge improvement.

Sorry forgot to say before upgrading make sure you backup the router settings.
 
When did this start, and what ISP are you using?

I had a problem with Tiscali/TalkTalk where web pages were displaying intermittently. So did a ton of other customers using Netgear DG834GT routers. Tiscali said I needed a new router, but when I changed from using their DNS server to Google's OpenDNS, everything worked just fine.

Upgrading the router firmware to the latest version is a good start though!

I'd check the network cable followed by the port on the router. If possible change the patch lead anyway and use a different port on the switch (router).

Also check the network speed, sometimes the "auto" feature doesn't play nice and you have to set it manually, 100MB or 1000MB Full Duplex. If the problem happens again open a command window and type the following;

tracert -d "your_isps_DNS_address" (without the quotes) ie. tracert -d 212.23.6.100

This will narrow down the problem area, the -d switch stops name resolution and will be quicker. The output should look like this;

Tracing route to 212.23.6.100 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms x.x.x.x <<=== Your router (gateway)
2 13 ms 13 ms 14 ms x.x.x.x <<=== Your routers internet connection(next hop)
3 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms 62.3.87.161 <<=== Some intermediate system
4 14 ms 15 ms 14 ms 62.3.83.66 <<=== As above
5 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms 212.23.6.100 <<=== ISPs DNS server
6 15 ms 14 ms 14 ms 212.23.6.100

Your router will also have some test utilities (ping/tracert) that can help you narrow down the problem between your PC / Router or Router / ISP. When you can't connect to the internet are you still able to connect to your router via HTTP?
 
Thanks for everyone's help with this. Unfortunate;y I had to go out at short notice last night so didn't get the chance to try the solutions out. However this evening it appears that the fault has disappeared (fingers crossed) so I may be back !!
