IE8 has decided to stop working! Originally it wouldnt play flash or javascript (Twitter,Facebook etc) so I switched to Firefox, now it displays as "Internet explorer No add ons" and doesnt load any pages. I uninstalled and updated, nothing works. There was no reason fo this ,I wasnt using PC at the time.
Currently using Firefox without problem.

Roll on the Appleites to tell us all how rubbish Microsoft are....

If the system restore doesn't work try opening Internet Explorer, select Tools from the menu bar and then Internet Settings. Click the Advanced tab and then click the Reset button at the bottom and click OK. Finally, close the browser and reopen it.

Use a better browser... Chrome... ;)

I had this once and ended up reinstalling the whole OS (it's the only time I ever reinstalled due to an app failure). I couldn't figure out what did it. Since moved to firefox and when that got too bloated, chrome..

I wouldn't touch Chrome with a bargepole, personally - it's packed with Google spyware. Instead I'd recommend SRWare Iron - it's developed from the Chromium project, much the same as Chrome is, but it comes without all of the Google crap. ;)

<sigh> there is no sanctuary for the paranoid ;)

BTW, the "google crap" makes browsing the internet a lot quicker as it can predict what you want in most cases. I like it...

Paranoid? Given Google's stated attitude to the retention of information? Not to mention the ahem 'mistakes' they've made over the years... :p

It might make the browsing a bit quicker but it comes at a price whether you're willing to pay that price or not is a matter for personal choice, of course ;)

<sigh> again ;) the default search provider for Iron is Google. They will retain exactly the same information whichever browser you use. Most of the other things you can opt out of.

Nothing like a good dose of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt to try and promote a sense of paranoia and one-upmanship ;)

FUD? Hardly. Google have a terrible attitude to data retention. Read some of their CEO's comments - a simple search on The Register will show you what I mean. It's nothing to do with one-upmanship either.

The default search provider can be changed in any browser - I use Scroogle a lot of the time as it takes advantage of Google's undeniably good search engine without leaving any traces or permitting them to drop cookies/track searches. If I couldn't use Scroogle I'd find another way or simply use another search engine.

Chrome is not considered trustworthy by the majority of the security community I'm afraid, but as I said in my previous post, it's a matter for personal choice. All I'm doing is putting the information out there. ;)

As our American friends say, YMMV :p

Saw this occur on someone elses computer. Somehow the link they were using to start internet explorer had been changed (wasn't them apparently) to the 'safe' version of internet explorer.
Try going Start->Run and type iexplore and press return.
If that version of explorer works, then you need to replace the link you are using.

A format of the PC might help if you don't mind doing one. Probably windows is corrupted (IE8) and a clean up works wonders.

Thanks for that Scroogle doo-dah, Tony.

Now changed from the spy folk and works a wee treat!

You have to be patient with the service - it hops onto Google at a URL behind the main one and they change it from time to time. Scroogle always seem to catch up though :D

Sometimes a quick format is a lot better than spending hours and hours trying to get to the bottom of it only to fail.

Hardly. A format means hours reinstalling and configuring software, it means remembering to save your favourites, export firefox bookmarks, export mailboxes, ensuring your data is backed up and then restoring it, getting all of your devices working...

A format is the very last resort in every case.

(unless you image your systems of course)

Not when you have an 'image' saved.

Takes no time at all to save email stuff, favs etc. Most people have data saved on an external these days.

Takes me an hour to format and get the pc up and running like it was after all working and installed.

What makes you think that the OP has imaging software? Not everybody uses external drives either and it may take YOU no time to back up the essentials but you have no idea of the OP's skillset. Too many assumptions here. ;)

Try uninstalling Google Desktop if you have it installed.

From personal experience, and some sleuthing around the web as I tried to fix my own PC problems, Google Desktop is a pita and the cause of many weird'n'wonderful problems on Windows based machines. After uninstalling it on my machine everything ran quicker and some really stubborn glitches with internet explorer (including flash/java issues as you've mentioned), backup routines, windows updates, antivirus software and random crashes resolved themselves instantly.

No difference still gives javascript and flash error. Btw it wont even let me download flash etc.Seems to be an add on corruption ?

Format is the answer this time i suspect

Nope. :p

I'd go with Neil's suggestion and if there's nothing showing as a problem then try disabling all of the add-ons and accellerators (right click and select disable), restart the browser and see if that makes any difference.

If it does, you can try enabling them one at a time until you find the problem.

I guess you wont find the answer mate. Seen it before where only a format will do the job.

Thanks for replies,I'll stick with Firefox until I can be bothered to formatmaybe :)
I noticed something else odd. The search feature in Xp isnt working, window opens up but no search boxes! Which has nothing to do with IE!

Could it all be virus related? I had some major trojans a couple of months back.

It's possible that it's related to the infection I suppose. Have you scanned the machine since then?

Get the malawarebytes out and see what it finds.
