Hi all. :help:This is a confusing one. I have a pc which is plugged into the internet and a laptop which is used on wifi through internet.Both work fine independently but if both are on the internet freezes,also if the laptop is on internet and we use the cordless phone in the house the laptop again freezes on internet.Any ideas in laymans terms please.:thinking::nikon:
 
I wonder if the reason the laptop freezes may be due to the wireless internet router and the phone may be on the same frequency. Have a look in the manual and see if you can change the routers channel it's working on. Most wireless routers default to channel 6. see if switching helps.

As far as the laptop and PC freezing, could it be that they are using the same IP address.The router should give each computer a unique IP. Are you using static IP's and have allocated the same IP to each unit

Better to put the PC and laptop on DHCP and let the router assign them.

If you've noticed the problem specifically when you use your wireless phone then that is the more likey cause, I've just bought wireless handsets and a wireless router at exactly the same time and had no end of grief.

There was no way to change the channel on the wireless handset, but could change channels on the wireless router via a broswer.

Mine was set to channel 1, changed to 6 and problem instantly dissapeared.
You may need to do some googling or reading to find out which channel your phone is using, and you want to have a gap of at least 5 channels between phone and router.

Bear in mind, if you have neighbours using wifi, they can intefere with yours if the signal is strong enough.

Same rule...google 'network sniffer' a free application that will detect all nearby wireless networks with the advantage of displaying the channels.
Set yours well away from theirs if possible.
 
It won't be a duplicate IP address as you say that the PC and laptop can speak to each other with no problems, it's only when you use them to go out to the 'Net that the issue arises.

Out of interest, has this always happened since you went on to your present ISP (or if you've been on it from before you had 2 machines, ever since you started using the pair) ?

Also what's the make and model of your router ?
 
I'd let the router set the IP. Most are set up do this automaticaly.

Have a look at the instructions that came with the router, It maybe as simple as running the set up disk again.

Try changing the ip addresses of the laptop and pc to force them to be different.
 
The router should be fine, and Sky don't have a reputation for getting confused when you have multiple internal connections.

How long has your router been on ? - they do over heat adn also suffer heat damage - it can affect the wireless side. I have the same model of router (non-sky) and reboot it once a week for safety (not really required, but can help). If you do reboot it, leave it off for at least a minute to cool down.
 
It sounds like the phone isn't plugged into a microfilter.
Somebody did that in a shop I used to work in, took me ages to work out why the internet turned off when the phone rang lol.
The rest of it's beyond me sorry.
 
You need to change the channel on the router. Call Sky tech support and they'll talk you through it. It sounds like either interference from something in your house or a neighbors wireless network. I had the exact same problem and had to change the channel my router was broadcasting on. Worked instantly.

Sky netgear routers are always set to channel 1 by default. Channel 6 is the one they recommend if you're having problems / interference, but any of the other channels work too.
 
also look at microwave ovens and cordless phones. Cordless phones are on the same band as wireless, Microwaves reek havoc with it.

Also look at the positioning of the Arial - Mine improved drastically when moved away from the PC, and ontop of a bookcase

Also consider the way your home is built - the new types of insulation (with foil on) are now found in loft insulation and plasterboards. if you have stud walls, this can be a mitigating factor

As someone mentioned - there are a number of bands available for you to tune your system too. Switching to a different band may help you avoid being swamped out by neibours.

Is the router secure - possibly half the street is using it?

Are you using the same technologies throuought - your laptop may be wirless G, the routher set to something else - etc. set.
 
Hi Richard.Dont think there is a problem with house insulation (to old). The router is set to channel 11 according to the label on the bottom.The router is secure as well. It seems to freeze on my laptop when we use the cordless phone.Also if both pc and laptop are on at the same time,we have to disconnect one from the internet.:shrug:

Try running the network set up wizard from Windows. This may resolve the problem. Make sure that both computers use the same workgroup name, and the router itself sets the IP address.

1. Re-site your cordless base station
2. Select a different chanell on your router and adapters

Dont tell me you have a static IP on either your pc or laptop! Set up all machines to obtain IP addresses automatically. If you do a IPCONFIG/ALL on all the machines what are the results?

Sometimes if one machine has a static IP, the router may give another the same IP, at which point the whole thing falls over. It is particularly bad for wireless connections, where the address assigned is renewed on each re-connection

Looks like I may have sorted the 2 computer issues.Have gone into my pc to obtain auto ip.If anybody is interested go to start - control panel-net connection-right click on LAN-left click properties-click internet protocol (TCP/IP)-highlight it-click properties-choose OBTAIN AUTO IP.It worked for me:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

say you assign the static adress: xxx.xxx.xxx.1 to the PC, and the router is dishing the addresses in order, all is well and good untill you turn the laptop on first, the routher then assigns the laptop xxx.xxx.xxx.1 to the laptop. when you then turn on the pc, there is a problem - Its address is in conflict with the DHCP assigned address

Only use static addresses for fixed PC's that remain allways attached to a network, at which point, if you introduce laptops - add a second router


Issue 2 with this approach is:
Say for example you asign a static IP and chanel to a laptop - what happens when you roam onto another network? laptops tyically connect to lots of networks, this is why you need to use the local DHCP server to assign it an address each time it connects- mainly because it is more than likley it wont have the same address available to it as last time it connected

Superb result. In that case you basically has an APPIPA address or static one, depending when you connected
 
Don't believe the BS about suing DHCP, it's the least secure option out there - static IP addresses does add an extra level of security on top of encryption.

If you want me to, PM me and I'll screen shot how to set up your router so that it will provide a tight set of IP addresses, allowing you to have a static on your PC and a floating on your laptop (or even both a static and be able to float on your laptop - which is what I do).

I am saying is that before you swapped the settings over, your desktop / laptop did or didnt get an address assigned to it depending on what the router had allready assigned to the other machine. In this instance, the PC assigns itself an address (which doesnt work)

While this sounds like a good idea, for the average consumer this is a bit OTT. In the corporate environment, it makes some sense. For a home user, It justs ads a layer of unnessacary pain

If you are 100% fluent with networking, it is a breeze to set up, but the issue with setting up a home network like this is not todays problem, it is the problem the user gets in a year, when they want to add another laptop, and they cant remember what IP address is OK, or how they set it up on the router, or what the router password is etc. etc.

The second issue with this, is when a user fiddles with the settings on the laptop, because it wont connect to some other network, and then comes home to find it now wont conect to his

Some valid points there Richard, but the simple way to get around potential conflicts, is to give the PC a high address, such as .100, or implement address reservation for the laptop.

No need for a second router mind you.
 
Sorry Chris, you may feel that way, but I don't. I mean I could add access lists, MAC address registration, and the rest, which will give an even more secure environment, but felt I'd leave it at that as it's easiest and will prevent most hijackers.

Reading back I guess that post may have came accross a little rude, which I didn't mean..I should have explained my thoughts.

WPA2 with AES with a long key, comprised of lower case, upper case, numbers and punctuation, will prevent most hijackers. This is a highly secure combination for a home user. The process for sniffing traffic is not particularly difficult, but trying to brute force, for example, a 13 character key comprised of the different cases and characters would take a very, very long time. Of course, if you set the key to "password" then there may be some issues :lol:

And if they do get past that, a static IP scheme and MAC authentication won't do a great deal, but it will cause you inconvenience. It's like wrapping a safe in plaster of paris in security terms.

Anyway, just thought I'd explain a little better :) Apologies for going a bit off topic!
 
Cheers for the apology and I apologise back for misunderstanding your intentions :)

Part of the reason I personally do not go with DHCP (except when I'm connecting my works laptop) is because it does broadcast a "I am here get an address from me) that ai****rt and similar can pick up before they chew through the encryption. Ok now we've moved on from simple WEP it takes more than 5-10 seconds, but if you're determined. Still most my friends MAC register, even those who are not technically adept, so there are worse than me :suspect:
