Internet image theft

I read that a bit earlier. It's pretty horrifying, especially when the guy who stole the photo said he thought it was computer generated. Pretty lame excuse!

This sort of thing happens more than you'd like to think. There have been quite a few stories on photo.net about people having their photos taken from the internet and used in advertisements. It's been done by some pretty large companies, too!

George.

not surprising
personally mistakes can happen. the shop owner thought it was generated...and apologised. who knows what the actual designer/thief thought.

at least it didn't portray them in a bad light, for example what about the caption...."can you tell that this happy family have worms?"
the worse one i saw was the self portrait of a young girl, (15 ish) demurely artful but in a basque or something. nothing really sexy but some skank stole it for the cover of his latest pornographic DVD....apparently he wasn't too bothered about being sued until she mentioned that she was 15 or so in the photo (taken two years earlier).
I think he got off lightly. maybe my information is out of date though...hopefully he got a good kicking too

DizMatt, I remember that.
She's actually a regular on Flickr too. Can't remember her name though.

TBH if it was me, I'd have let the shop owner keep it up. Something about being in a shop window in Prague makes me smile :p

This picture of an Texan girl called Alison Chang was lifted from Flickr by Virgin Australia

without her knowledge. Her family are suing Virgin for invasion of privacy and libel over the "virgin to virgin" tag line....

Ooohh thats going to be expensive I suspect.

It's now headlining on the BBC web site

Slow news day?

impressive re photoshopping and airbhrushing to get the image to that scale from FLICKR!!!
must have taken hours....surely easier just to get a model and a photographer!

love the irreverent advertising campaign slogan..."are you with us or what!"
aussies...gotta love em

just goes to show the importance of watermarking your images

I agree. Pretty cool to be on a picture like that in a grocery store. I might try to send the owner a pic or two of my family for him to use.

I hate to say it but Flicker is getting a bit a bad reputation for image theft, I can't help wondering whether it's actually I good idea to use it as a host.

And posting someone else's the image on a forum (lifted from Flickr?) is no different to Virgin using it?
Lets look after our own shall we and not abuse another photographers copyright.

It doesn't matter whether it's on Flickr or anywhere else on the Internet.
People who are not willing to pay are surprisingly creative (e. g. cracked software, pirated movies, posting other people's artwork without their permission, ...).

There's no good way of stopping unless you start spreading FUD or threats of legal actions.
Then again, I'd bet most people aren't really aware of the fact they are stealing - they probably think it free for them to use if it's on teh Interwebs (grammar wrong on purpose ;)).

No matter where you put an image on the internet it's always susceptible to theft. The internet in general has a bad reputation for image theft. If you don't want your images stolen you've got a couple of choices, don't put them on the internet or use low resolution versions for the web, or limit your flickr account to trusted contacts only.
