Is it possible to connect my laptop to the internet via my mobile phone (Sony XPeria X10) ...?

Thanks in advance.

It is a process called tethering, if it is doable with your phone it should be in the handbook :)

If that is an android phone then yes it is possible. My Son did it earlier on his but I think he has installed a custom ROM as well. It may not be possible on a standard phone. You also need to know how the tethering programme handles the data. It may get expensive if your service provider doesn't see it as inclusive data. I don't think it's particularly fast either.

In short - yes it is possible with a few caveats.

Thanks for the replies  I'll have a read and see what I can do :)

Not sure about sony but it's easy with a Nokia, they even provide the software.

You need Android 2.2 (Froyo) installed for tethering - I think the X10 is currently running an older version, but hopefully SE will provide the update for you soon.

I don't think you do need Android 2.2 for tethering. There's an app in the market place called EasyTether which was out long before 2.2 was. I've downloaded it but not got around to trying it yet, fingers crossed it works for you.

With Nokia, all you will need is just to install the nokia pc internet access and connect it using the usb cable.
But like what's mentioned, the speed aren't particularly fast anyway. Normal browsing is fine.

I love all the helpful references to Nokia in this thread.

I'm not going to mention Nokia's, although I use one. :)

Your X10 will do tethering, although you might need Easytether.

Depending on your phone network you may need a data plan or add-on.
I use 3 payg. They offer a mobile internet addon for a fiver a month.

Oh yeah, you're right, there are apps that do this - I'd never looked because my phone came with Froyo installed, where it's built in to the wireless settings. There is at least EasyTether, PDANet, and Proxoid which is free but looks like a pain to set up.
