I've got the ip address for someone, is it possible to find out where there from? Someone is leaving rather rude comments on my site and would quite like to know where there from!

Google Analytics is pretty good for tracking the location of visitors...and your web hosting should have something similar in the admin panel!

I'm sure some clever clogs will give you a more useful answer :)
 
Yeah, it is possible using an IP tracer. It'll give you information on location, network provider and things like that. But remember, if they are hiding behind a proxy the IP address won't be of any use. There is also the chance that they could be using someone elses machine, things like that. But they do come in handy from time to time. If they are on broadband they'll have a fixed IP address in which case you can pass that onto their network provider if their comments warrant serious action.
 
Do a Google search for IP Trace. Some are free some of the better ones are commercial.
 
IP tracing wont help you find them.. it might give you a rough idea, though.
Use the IP to find out their ISP. Find the abuse@ e-mail address for the ISP and report them.
This assumes they use a static IP address and not a dynamic one. If they use a dynamic one then report the IP address together with the data and time.

I've found out what isp their using and got the email addy from them to report abuse to :)
