Ipad for Software editing

Yes
Well the wife started her free 6 week taster course.

The guy recommended that if you have an ipad for basic editing it is very good.

Having downloaded GIMP on to the laptop, there first thing that became obvious that laptop screen are rubbish colour wise, depending on your viewing angle the picture changes dramatically.

So for basic editing the ipad seems great because at least the colours are steady,

We have downloaded Snapseed and seem pretty good.

So what else is outthere? Dont mind spending a few quid on software and what is the best way to transfer images from the memory card to the ipad for editing?

photoshop express :)

memory card to ipad, use the camera connection kit... £25 I think, you get 2 adapters, 1 for USB to camera, the other is SD card input.

Photogene!!

Avoid photoshop touch - it's tricky, unintuitive and annoying.

Oh, and the camera kit is invaluable - I think there are third party ones for cf cards too.

As above really. My daughter uses express and it's not bad at all.

The camera connection kit is well worth it, even if I think it's a bit pricey for what it is ...

IIRC, the official Apple camera connection kit's USB port cannot power a card reader but I could be wrong. IMO, the iPad 2's screen is too small to do any serious editting.

It won't or wouldn't before I updated to iOS 6 :-( but I haven't tried since the update...

But there are adaptors for a few different memory cards online.

The apple USB connector powers my Belkin CF card reader okay.

Just bought a IPAD/SD Card reader for a couple of quid. All the reviews on amazon pointed to it working very well.

Nod, I would probably agree that for serious editing a ipad would probably be limiting but for basic editing for newbie, it appears to me that its far better than laptop with a 15 inch screen due to the problems mentioned in the OP.

Glad to hear it.

I use a netbook, with a 10" screen (corner to corner) as a basic editting tool while on holiday. Much smaller and lighter than a laptop, has 3 USB ports and a built in SD card reader, just no optical disk drive, which makes transfering software onto it a bit of a faff! It's a Medion Akoya which is (IIRC) a rebadged MSI Wind. I use it in conjunction with a Canon Selphy 710 dye sub printer for personalising postcards to send back.

My wife has an I Pad 2 but it's her work's, so she's unwilling to fork out any money on extra hardware and applications for it. As soon as the next crop of tablets hit the shelves running Windows 7, she's going for one of those. Then, we'll look at an external optical drive to use on that and my netbook.

Whoops! I was thinking of a hard drive, not a card reader (because the apple adaptor is a card reader!) sorry guys! My mistake!!

I am going to be really boring here and say this: have you tried iPhoto?

Agree, I think iPhoto is great. It is all I ever use and perfect for the basics (exposure, levels, sharpness, contrast, highlights, shadows, WB etc,.)
with the added benefit of direct handling of many types of raw files when used on computer.

It obviously can't do what Photoshop can and is more of a basic Aperture or Lightroom but easier and quicker to use than any of them.
