I have an iPhone 3G that only plays sound out of the right earphone when you plug any headphones into it. I used to use Sennheiser headphones and was gutted when they 'broke' so stupidly ordered new ones. When I tried them at first and again there was only one earphone working I couldnt believe it and was raging. Then I tried, them in an old ipod and they worked fine, they also do in my blackberry and in other devices. More annoyingly my old headphones work as well :bang:

Has anyone else had this problem before and what should I do? as I now have chucked away a load of old (still working :() headphones and got an iPhone that doesn't play music properly.

Thanks in advance

The iPhone has a unique headphone jack, in that it has 4 segments rather than the normal 3. The additional segment is to allow the use of the microphone built into iPhone earpiece.

If you want to use headphones with a conventional miniature stereo jack you need an adapter to convert from 4 segment to 3. Any good phone shop will sell them. Simply tell them you want to use your conventional headphones with an iPhone.

Im not sure, I thought that this was only a problem with the original iPhone, all my iPhones have worked fine with any headphone

So does that explain why my nokia headphones with mic are all distorted and fuzzy when used on the iPhone 4 or 3GS?

Well that jack is for the iPhone 2G, the one with the metal back, if yours has a black/white plastic back, you shouldn't need that really, from memory.

just clean the socket out using a cotton bud and some meth's or alcohol.. dust gets in and stops them working properly.

Ordered one of the cables to try, will stick a cotton bud in there now, and if neither work will stomp my feet and go back to my BlackBerry :D lol
