Hi all.

This is really doing my head in......

Got e-mails set up on my 3G iPhone, and receives mail perfectly, but just cannot send.
I'm using Virgin Media (with an @ntlworld.com address)
Been onto their website and entered the exact settings for the smtp, but no joy.

HEEEEELLLLPPPPP!!!!

TIA, Andy

You can't send from an NTL email address unless connected to an NTL connection I'm afraid.

Hi, I have had the same problem with virgin emails not sending. I eventually got through to virgin media technical support and the problem lies with my email address! apparantly, because my email address ends with ntlworld.com the outgoing SMTP server does NOT support outgoing mail for anyone with the old ntl address. The technical support team told me to contact virgin media as it was their problem not virgin mobiles! At least this answered my question and stopped me brousing the internet for a solution!! I just made a gmail account, and now I just forward all my ntlemails to the google account, just until I slowly phase the ntl email out.

I used to have this problem and it resulted in me finally getting a .Mac account (as it was back then). I guess you're using smtp.ntlworld.co.uk or a similar one with Virgin? When using the smtp settings of an isp such as NTL, you can only send while actually using that connection, it's a pain in the backside.

Who's your contract with? Try changing the smtp to smtp.o2.co.uk or smtp.orange.co.uk and see if that works, I don't think it does but it's worth a try. If it does, it will only be POP3, so any emails received on your phone will not be viewable on your PC.

To be honest, you'll be much better off in the long run just going for a Gmail account.

Try this, taken from a recent thread elsewhere.

Email settings

Incoming Mail Server: pop.ntlworld.com

Outgoing Mail server: smtp.ntlworld.com
Other Mail Server: smtp.o2.co.uk

Click the settings icon and access mail settings.
The two ntlworld.com settings are when using VM and when out and about use the secondary o2 server.
the sent email will still show your email address but is just sent using the o2 server.

Obviously change O2 for whoever your network provider is if required.

click the outgoing mail server and then use the o2 setting in the "other smtp server" setting

This is how I do it too, You automatically get an O2 username etc when you get an iphone, go onto their site to find out your details..

Cheers chaps

I am with Vodafone. It's an unlocked (not jailbroken) O2 phone.
I have tried the secondary smtp server with smtp.vodafone.com address, but didn't work.

I actually have a googlemail account.
Would be a MAJOR headache to lose my ntl email and start using googlemail though........ :bang:

I have 2 Email Acounts set on the iPhone, phone is with Vodafone, emails are Tiscali and my own domain, to send have to use the Vodafone SMTP.

If all else fails, try using authsmtp.com

It's a paid-for service but solves all sorts of problems including emailing from hotel wifi which often block port 25

Can't you get gmail to pick up your ntl mail?

Andy, the SMTP I use on Vodafone is:

send.vodafone.net

Give it a try.

Ok, what I've done is delete both my ntlworld accounts from the iPhone, and put the gmail one on (which works a treat!)
Also gone onto the virgin media mail page, and put my gmail account into the 'forward to' settings.
I shall see if this works.

But when I reply to emails, I suppose they will get my gmail address.
Which isn't a problem, I hope!!
