it'll be interesting to see what your supposed issues with it are.
I suppose it depends on what you want it for. For me it's replaced my Palm as a map/diary/address book and pretty neat it links everything to a phone. Having my email with me is kinda useful also
Being a hobby photographer, I've never really been bothered about the camera on a phone, but I love the screen on the iPhone and ability to carry a portfolio around with me.
I don't make lots of calls, or use lots of text, but the web link/applications are pretty neat too i.e. I have my 50D users manual on it, a sunrise calculator (invaluable in Sri Lanka) etc.
The media stuff is ok, use it a bit, I suppose that's one of the big points of the iPhone. Lying in bed at night using itunes to grab podcasts is pretty neat.
Poor stuff. Battery life can be poor, but no real difference to other high spec equivilant phones. Usually mine gets to about 75% battery at the end of the day and gets a recharge on the pc for about an hour when I sync it. On holiday when it didn't get used much I was charging it every three days with approx 40-50% battery left.
iTunes needs getting used to and is a poor piece of software at times, but then it's becoming almost a standard piece of software these days with the number of ipods sold.
At the risk on degenerating this thread into an "iPhone is rubbish" one (which it isn't) i'll try and answer.
I'm sure you already know the main arguments against the iPhone (MMS, Video, copy and paste to name the big ones), which have all finally been resolved with the Gs (which is why I stated the 3Gs has relieved most of the problems), but there are still a few major issues with the phone, to start with (multitasking, closed system and having to use third party software to connect it to your PC and the lack of security for corporate customers as well as a couple of others), these issues mean even though the rest of the phone is quite good it doesn't stand up to the competition for a lot of people (unless you want a basic phone that's just a bit snazzier than a normal Samsung, Sony Ericsson or Nokia).
As for your specific examples:
By map I assume you don't mean google maps (available on all smart phones), but sat nav programs (which have only just started selling versions of their mobile products for the iPhone after years of being available for the rest of the smart phone OS's)? As for diary and address book, that's standard on all phones I know of. As for email, the iPhone isn't too bad, however compared to either a Blackberry or WM phone it's mediocre at best.
I personally like a good camera on a phone (which a lot of smart phones seem to lack, but generally they are ok) due to not needing to carry a compact around when I don't have my DSLR. The screen on the other hand is a standard feature on most smart phones (and arguably not as good as WM phones due to the low resolution, WM phone screens are a lot sharper).
Apps wise, yes the iPhone has loads of apps, but so do the other smart phones (in fact the iPhone is way behind WM and possibly by Symbian as well). Both the examples and more are available for WM devices for a start (I have "apps" that do the same thing on my Touch HD). I hear a lot of iPhone users boasting about facebook integration, not realising this is a standard feature on most Smart Phones (not that I use it...). The one benefit on the apps front is the apps store, which is only now being copied by other companies. However this has it's drawbacks, the closed system mentioned earlier. You can only install apps that Apple allow (which is partly why so many people jailbreak their phones)...
Grabbing podcasts can be done by any smart phone, however generally you don't need to install any software with it, it will just "work".
There is quite a difference battery life wise between similarly specced phones, the original iPhones would only last a day (if that) with reasonable useage, the 3Gs has sorted this a bit but there seems to be some kind of QC issue coming in, as a lot of people mention no change in the battery life compared to older ones. In comparison my HD (which is better specced than the 3Gs) will last 2 days with heavy useage, and over a week with standard useage (short phone call or two, few texts, some music, internet etc.). That's not dissimilar to most WM and Android phones.
iTunes is terrible (IMO obviously, some people love it..

) however what I really detest is the forcing of you to use it if you buy an iPod or iPhone. There is no reason for Apple to do this, all other phones and mp3 players don't need specific software so why Apple products? It's not particularly standard even now, add that to the pain it is (if possible at all) to allow more than one "i" device to connect on the same account.
After all that i'm not saying its a bad phone, in fact it's pretty good (especially the 3gs), however it's not miles ahead of anything else (or arguably ahead at all). Yes the UI is good most of the time, but it's not that much better than any of the other OS's out there, IMO it also looks a bit dated. The UI also hides the main issues of the phone, that there is nothing unique or revolutionary about the phone, and in some ways it is still behind a lot of the others (although the 4th version may change that, Apple seem to have listened to most of the criticism about the two previous versions). The lack of those important features (as mentioned at the start of the post) are IMO why it is a mediocre device (at the moment, it used to be a poor one, but as mentioned before the 3Gs solved a lot of the issues).
I think a lot of the social issues with the phone are because a lot of people just take the iPhone as some kind of revolutionary device, they flash it in peoples face, and anyone tech savvy gets a bit annoyed at being told standard features on their phone are apparently unique to the iPhone (Apples adverts for it don't help either... "G-sensor", fancy that... VIDEO!!, wow..., Copy and paste!1111!!!, erm... ok...

).
