IPS monitor for photo editing - colour gamut?

No
I am considering an upgrade to my existing monitor – a DELL 2209WA - & am looking at a 24” IPS display.

My problem is that I am getting myself totally confused about colour gamuts and in particular whether I should opt for a standard gamut or wide-gamut monitor. I have read so many articles that I am just going round in circles now!

If it helps to understand my situation - I take images on a 50D & always use RAW. I usually process my RAW images using Canon's DPP (sometimes ACR/Photoshop Elements 9) and save to JPEG. My images are printed at a commercial printer as I don't have an inkjet capable of photo printing. Currently I use Windows XP but am considering an upgrade to Windows 7.

Am I right in thinking that given the above, the only advantage to my buying a wide gamut monitor is that I would see my RAW images displayed on screen with a wider range of colours than I do at present? Presumably, this “gain” would then be lost when I convert to the SRGB colour space.& send my images off for printing?

Can anyone give me any guidance, please?

Many thanks.

I have both a 24" wide gamut and a 24" standard gamut monitors, and the images are represented much more faithfully on the standard one.
The wide gamut seems to make everything a bit more saturated and has a bias towards red.

Im guessing you are right in your theory but I dont know the technicalities, all I know is my real world experience.

Gamut shouldn't matter as you should calibrate the monitor to a particular standard. The gamut is then limited by the callibration. The only thing to worry about is whether this reduces the bit-depth available to you.

My 2410s are run in sRGB and calibrated in that space.

Both mine are calibrated to sRGB but the wide gamut monitor is still more red than the non wide gamut one.

Then they aren't calibrated properly... The hue would be exactly the same if they were as sRGB is a defined colourspace.

Used a spyder3 elite, not sure how it cant be done properly.
If you read the reviews of the monitor is question is was also reported how have a bias towards red even after calibration.

If you have the wide gamut monitor in sRGB "mode" then you might as well have bought a cheaper monitor.

My U2410 runs in "Standard" mode (if I remember correctly) and does look a lot better than my other standard monitor (A dell FPW2009)

I had to download and use the very latest Spyder calibration software to get the best from it though.

My monitors are HP's.
One is a LP2475w and the other is a ZR24w
The LP is the wide colour gamet one.

Apart from sellers on eBay best price I have seen is Amazon at £462.

I've be weighing this one up against the U2311 that is £200 cheaper.

How good is the 2410? Did you compare it to the 2311 yourself?

If I can piggyback this posting - I was looking at this http://SPAM/6d8wkx9
but then saw this a bit cheaper http://SPAM/4hk8b2q

Any opinions/advice?

Thanks for that Rob - lot to take in there but the conclusion looks good. Just wish it had a HDMI input as my intended use is as a dual monitor with my Dell Studio 17 laptop. I suppose I could look for a display port to HDMI adapter?

Hi Rob,

Not compared them at all, but I bought mine off ebay around this time last year. Paid £360 each I think!! They came with a Dell backed guarantee and I know they do as I had to use it... Very pleased with the seller (xpsdirect) but they don't have any for sale any more...

I've seen xpsdirect before when they've good deals.

Was it a 3 year warranty?
