Is £599 for a Canon 40D + 17-85mm lens a good deal?

Yes
I was in a branch of Currys earlier and they had the 40D kit in the clearance section marked down to £599 and I thought this was a pretty good price.

I've never thought about swapping to digital before but I was severely tempted even though I can't really afford it.

In the end the complete lack of anyone in Currys to help me brought me to my sences. There was a group for 4 of them standing around talking by the end of the photography counter and when I asked for help, instead of one of them actually helping me, they put out a call on the tannoy and just carried on gossiping. I waited another 5 minutes but nobody bothered to help me so I left with my bank balance intact :D

Providing it's brand new and sealed it's a very good price.
Having had a quick look around it looks like the 40D is being phased out.
Don't let that put you off, it is still a very good camera.

The 17-85 would sell second hand for about £250, and the 40D is a great camera.

So yes a good deal, if it had been me I'd have a spare 40D now :D

I've got a 40D and also and an EF-S 17-85mm IS USM

If I was shopping for something right now with that price in mind I'd get it again.

good call you can get much better s/h for the money.......like a 40d and some decent glass or you could go even better and go for a Nikon body

Its brand new but I'm not sure if there was only the display model left or if there were more that were sealed.

I might head up again then next week, i'll have to look closely at my finances *** because I'm starting uni in 2 weeks time so its probably not the best time to go on a spending spree!

The only thing that would put me off is that 17mm wouldnt really be wide enough for me so then I would want a 10-22 so thats even more money...

Dont think anywhere has any new boxed stock, I think its display model only!

Yeah thats what I was thinking. Though if my experience of their customer service is anything to go buy, the camera is probably untouched by human hands

The 40D is and always will be a great camera. If its new then buy it asap.

Thinking about it, I would probably have to sell the 17-85 and get a different lens.

The lenses I use most on my film camera are 19mm and 55mm, is there any lenses out there that would give me that sort of range?

Im confused as the 17-85 lens covers both 19mm and 55mm.

19mm is equiv to 12mm on APS-C. So Tokina 12-24mm is good. Then maybe 50mm prime, tamron 17-50mm, or 28-75mm are cheaper starters.

From my experience 17-85mm is very easy to sell on.

That Tokina sounds quite good, 19-38mm is quite a good range, I think I can live with it not stretching to 55mm.

I did a quick search and it seems you can get one for about £300 quid and if I could sell the 17-85 for £250 then it would only be costing me £50.

This is getting tempting...

If it is and at that price, it may not be there next week. I'd do a good search on the internet first thing and if it is still a good price, try to get down there and look at it and buy it, before someone else does

If you do get it, hope you enjoy it

Just thought I'd do an update on this incase anyone is interested.

I went back into the store yesterday to have a look and it was still there but the one on the shelf was the only one left.

On closer inspection it had a scuff on one corner (from a possible drop?) and a small scratch on the screen so I decided not to get it.

It obviously wasnt looked after and the screen scratch was a deal breaker, they really annoy me.

I can see why the marks/damage put you off - £599 for that gear is a good price I think I might have a look in my local Currys just in case...

If the marks were just cosmetic and it worked ok could have tried to bargain it down a bit more.
Reckon you could have got a good few extra quid off and you might easily scuff it the first day you used it anyway

Just bought a new camera and although i'm not going to be careless with it, determined not to be worried about a few scratches and scrapes
Not much point having the thing if its just sits in a padded bag
