Is 40D to 1D MK3 Good Upgrade

Hi All

Looking for advice on upgrading to an immaculate condition 1D MK3 or a new 7D. I currently have a 40D and would like to get into sport and motor sport photography. Grateful for any advice really :)
 
I'd go for a 1d3 but then again I already have one :)

I think you'd be happy with either body, I went for the 1d3 purely for the build quality. The 7D is a fantastic body but the 1d3 with it's better weather sealing and more rugged build was my choice.

Mine cost me over the odds as a factory refurb but with only 9380 shots on it when I got it and in absolute mint condition I was happy to pay a little extra.
 
Would have to be the 1D MK3.

Hi Chris

Had a quick look at your flickr and it seems that you also use a 5D MK2, Is this your weapon of choicew over the 1D?
 
Increased fps, better build and waterproof. All ideal for sports.

depends what your doing... I upgraded two mkIIIs to 2 mkIVs and cost me a fortune.. but the extra ISO and the few more MP made it truly worthwhile.. people say its not about the MP .. well yes it is when your using primes and esp for sports when you cant alway fill the frame.. the extra MP means you can crop more :) The ISO is far better than the MKIII by a million miles.. thats important for myself.. is it for you?

Thanks for your post, I suppose the thing with this is that I was going to buy the 7D and Park Cameras just happened to have a 2nd hand 1D MK3 that is absolutely mint (could literally be new) for near enough the same price. It is a 58 Serial Number so not affected with the initial AF issues and I did want a wider end to the 24-105 lens but not FF wide. I don't really like landscapes and think that the "H" sensor would be more suited. I am definitely not a pro but I would like better AF for sports.
ISO is important, but I cannot afford the current Pro camera (MK4).
Still confusing myself
 
You would likely not be disappointed with either, but I can tell you, for free, that once you use a 1 series body, using anything else will just feel wrong. On that basis, you are best off getting a 7D. Forbidden fruit.....
 
PS, why not get a 1D mk 2? Sub-500 quid, and a stonking camera. There is no difference in image quality between this and the mk 3. The key differences are that the mk3 has a nicer screen (which is still some way behind the 7d), and has a clunky menu system. You will get used to it quickly, and can then enjoy spending £800 on new glass.

Ha Ha, Yes I can see that one :) I have huge hands so it does make a difference :) My main concern really was old vs new technology. Does it make a difference in this case or has the 7D caught up with the 1D 3?

Well, after much deliberation I am now the owner of a 1D MK3. Now got to go through the manual and learn all the setups :) Happy Days...
 
Congratulations on your purchase. Can we expect some pictures when you're up and running?? :)
