Is a 17-55mm f2.8 really worth it?

Done...pfft...tzz...
It's a lens...it looks like all the other ones of this type...

Its a FX lens thou... I'm used to the tiny DX ones.. or a Sigma

So.. It seems that I will never know now as decided to go with & purchasedb the Nikon 28-70mm f2.8... Why did I do that after all this - it was as an investment if I was to go FF at some stage in the future... Not only that, I got one for a few quid more than the price of a used 17-55mm f2.8... So to all that have helped & commented on this thread - it was all very much appreciated...

THANKYOU

went into this thread wanting a 17-55, now i feel like i need one! yikes!! :)

Well, i hope to upgrade to a d300 or d300s early next year, so one of these would be a worthy investment. And would be a lovely bit of glass on my d90 :)

 A blast from the past....

Glad it helped you to decide... As I went for the Nikon "beast" 28-70mm f2,8 afterwards.. Then went full frame and got the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8..

I think that for almost the same price you may be better of with the Nikon 28-70 as then its an investment for when you decide to go FF..

That is of course the range suits... Then again you may even decide to go for the D700 - as many said to me when I went from the D90 - D300s that I should go for the D700...

Thats just to throw the cat amongst the birds thou

now you have gone and done it! I might as well go for the 24-70mm and get a 70-200f/2.8 whilst im at it... but that will leave a gap under 28.... :)

ive done a bit more research and the 24-70mm certainly is favourable... oh drat!

Done that as well - ended up getting the VRII shortly after the the 24-70mm - same seller as well...

Why not just jump straight in for the D700 as well - saves you goin for a D300/300s & selling it later for a D700.... :p

lol, im sure my bank would love that.... actually, i think my wife would get to me first! :)

Im going to pop down to my local LCE and see if they can get either lens in for me to play with, short of that i will hire one or two of them and play for a week.

Personally, coming from a DX past and probably will stay there for a little while the 17-55 is a cracking lens. It gives a nice range of zoom. Probably not as good optically (or whatever other area) as the 24-70, but then again I'm not pixel peeping and not really complaining.

I do find that the 28mm is a little too narrow of a view on a DX body though. I've contemplated a lot about upgrading the 17-55 to a 24-70 in order to 'future-proof' myself, but ultimately I thought I'd rather spend the money on different lenses to broaden my possibilities as a FF is quite far off in the distance for me.
