Is a Canon 5D still any good?

As per the title really. I know that the Canon 5D is full frame, about 12.5MP, but is it still any good?
I have also heard that it is pretty useless above 400 ISO but have no proof of that. Would it be any better then my Sony A700?
Would it be a good camera to fit an M42 adaptor too, and use it for all my manual focus work?
Is a good 5D body worth £280?
 
I am not a Canon user, but from what I understand, the 5D was a very good camera when released, so no reason why it still shouldn't be, just because technology moves on doesn't mean old tech becomes useless ;)

Cheers Tel, totally agree with you about old kit (why I have old MF lenses). I was just interested from anyone who owned one what they thought about the performance at lower light levels.
 
Perfectly usable at the max ISO of 1600 and I'm a little surprised it didn't offer anything higher; to suggest not using anything above 400 is ludicrous.
I like mine apart from the 3 fps shooting rate and lack of MFA -which limits it's use for wildlife.
Price sounds about right- I paid £320 inc del. on fleabay in December with 3 or 4 batteries.

Who told you that? I used to use mine at any ISO up to and including 3200.

All ISO 3200, f1.4 hand held from a fishing trip...

1/6 sec.




1/30 sec.




1/60 sec.



Personally I wouldn't bother with manual focus as I find it a pain unless the subject is big in the frame. I used to do a lot of flower shots with mine and that was MF but other than that I didn't bother. I tried some Zuiko MF lenses but I gave up PDQ. There are no focus aids available on the 5D, no magnified view, no peaking, nada. OK we used to manage with MF back in the day but back in the day we had focus screens which were much more MF friendly. CSC are the way to go for MF IMVHO and I do so with my Sony A7 and Panny G1, they both have MF aids..

ISO 3200 is available but probably an extended offering that you have to enable but once enabled it's there and it seems to work well enough IMVHO.
