Evening all, read so much about the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-S and just looking for some real world reviews!!

More importantly how much better is it over the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR??

I understand it's bigger and heavier but I think I'd probably keep the 70-300 for walk about then the 80-400 for specific days or subjects

It's much better, especially at the long end of the zoom.
 
I have both lenses. Since I got the 80-400 the 70-300 stays at home and only gets used when I travel as it is lighter in my hand luggage and less of a hit if it gets knocked around. The 80-400 is in a different class and so it should be when you compare the prices.
 
consider the new 300mm f4 VR PF with/without the Tc14Elll
 
It's very good especially on my d800e I can do huge crops and it seems to resolve the detail some of my older lens would not when doing heavy crops
