bring on the d400.
+1
Just buy the D7000!!!
If the D400 combines the advances of the D7000 with the pro body/controls of the D300 it will be a pretty impressive bit of kit.
For me the main killer for the D7000 is the plastic lens mount - I know it probably wouldn't have, but even with the comparatively lightweight 80-200 f/2.8 on it, my old D80 with the same mount felt as if the lens wanted to pull the front off the camera. If the op is only planning to use consumer-grade lenses then that wouldn't be an issue though....
Ultimately the op needs to go and try the different cameras and see which one they find most comfortable to use, the D90 and D7000 are much smaller and lighter than the D300s, but the 300s feels far more robust (and in my opinion, more comfortable to hold) and has more buttons/controls for the most commonly used features, reducing the necessity with the lower models to have to delve into the menu system every time you want to change, say, the iso.
Graham,
Are we talking about the lens or the body having the plastic mount?
If body is this the same on the D90?
&
I've done the "feeling" bit and like you I prefer the bigger bodies.
But, hasn't the D7000 incorporated more of the 300s controls? Namely twin dial?
Most if not all Nikons allow you to chAnge ISO from controls without need to go into menus?
totaly agree graham, plastic mount with my siggy 50-500mm os walking around like i do with it on my d300(would scare me)If the D400 combines the advances of the D7000 with the pro body/controls of the D300 it will be a pretty impressive bit of kit.

Video is a sort of hygiene factor thing and would not suit a pro but better for a consumer.

i think the d400 will be the same d300s body but with the d700 sensor and will shot 10fps and still have the 52pt af system but just faster.
and the metering system from the d7000.

yeah sorry
Did you drop a 0 there? If yes, then I agree, although I think they will tweak the styling slightly to differentiate it from the older model.
