to add a watermark across even an amateur image being posted on any web-hosting site - even if the post is just for general interest

not from a commercial viewpoint - I'm NOT that good!.:D... but just so I dont see my fav landscape appear elsewhere lets say

Its so easy to have your images clicked away and used elsewhere, I would mark evey image you feel may be abused.

If it deters people nicking your work and passing it off as their own, yes. Although I do find it strangely amusing that everyone gives themselves an official sounding name MJ Photography rather than simply putting (C) Mike Jones, unless they actually trade as MJ Photography.

Watermarking has no effect on your copyright, but does add a step in the process of someone copying your work. I tend to use it more for marketing purposes so when my images are shown by clients or friends to other people they have a reference back to who took the photo.

I don't presume that my pictures are any good, and I only post on here for critique, however I stamp them all visibly with my name. Even if they are crap, they are my crap and I don't want anyone else feel that they are free to use as they see fit.

simply putting (C) Mike Jones.....:)

thanks all for the quick replies - will do

(c) John Anthony Powell.........hows that then ? - not even hyphenated..:p

Someone's going to nick the "c" from your copyright logo if you don't close the entrance and exit. © :p

I've just started doing mine with "© Scott Marshall". As mentioned above, it may not have an effect on your copyright, but there are so many people that simply don't realise (or ignore the fact that) web images are copyrighted. :nono: Every little helps. :)

Now, do you put it neatly in the corner where it can easily be cropped out, or slap bang across the middle...

I think that depends on what you are trying to achieve... if you have a set of event photos or wedding photos posted on the WWW and want people to buy them then put it across the middle. If you have a photo for display, maybe not commercial, then put it on the corner so the image looks good and you get the credit. At the end of of the day, don't post high resolution images to the WWW then all people could get is low resolution.

oooooh - are you the one who posted a RAF Tornado and I said put your logo at the bottom...:lol:

"What goes around, comes around"...;)

ok, how do I add a large watermark semi-opaque across the image

dont have any up-market editing software
just MS Paint and Paint.Net is my limit

On a PC holding down the ALT key while typing '0169' on the numeric keys will give you the copyright symbol. Handy in notepad web pages and photoshop etc..

I would guess the easiest way to do it in Paint.net is to create a new layer, type your text into it and pick your colour/size/etc, then drag the layer's opacity slider down so that you can see the image through it.

Now that's the million dollar question. In the corner and it's useless, slap bang in the middle and it ruins the shot, especially if you're posting it up here for crit.
It can be done well though, I think it's desantnic (sp?) who has a watermark that despite going slap accross the middle of the page, still manages to leave it viewable.

looks stupid IMHO same with joe blogs photography at the bottom on every ***** shot taken

I watermark mine with my webaddress. I post a lot of photos on car forums from BTCC and other events. Through my website stats I have seen my images being hotlinked on quite a few different sites.
I'm not bothered about people posting my images elsewhere, its just annoying when I find them and no credit has been given. Not even a link to the thread on the original forum.

I see people put watermark with 'firstname lastname photography' on the crapshots of their mates that they put on facebook... strangely enough, you don't look like stock models, and the image is 800px wide and compressed badly by facebook, noone's going to look at it, let alone steal it...

VSO Image Resizer v3.0 is available on free download; that can resize (obviously) and/or watermark multiple images at once.

As far as I see it, If you dont mind your image being stolen then upload it without a watermark, If you want to cut down on what your stolen image can be used for watermark the **** out of it. Probably still wont stop some dim **** wit stealing it though.
