Would you consider going from a D5000 to a D200 an upgrade? Better built body but not as advanced and less pixels?
I am using the camera a lot (10,000 in 10 months) and whilst the D5000 does a good job it is not very durable. Cost has to be a factor and 2nd hand 200's are going for a song whilst the D300's are still holding their value very well at just over £700. Another option is to wait and see what the new incarnation of the D90 will be like although will probably be a little more than a 2nd hand D300.........? Newer is not always better but advances in NR and better sensors have got to result in a better quality end result..............?
