I have upgraded from a canon 50d to 5D mk II and for a while operated both cameras but as I am not a professional decided to sell the 50D which left me with several lenses most suitable for APS-C... Which in turn I have sold on.
I am left with a Canon 70-200 F4.0 L and 17-40 F4.0 L lenses.

I like Landscape and Portrait photography.

Is it really necessary to plug the 40-70 mm gap, and what lens would be most suited to my hobby?

Thanks

There is no need to plug the gap unless you feel that you need a lens in that range, your current setup is perfect for landscape work. If it were me in your situation I'd look to add a 50 f1.4 not so much to plug the gap as to give you a fast glass option as I wouldn't be without one.

As a1ex said, there's no need to fill that gap for what you do. Any type of photography can be done with any kind of equipment. So when choosing it's about knowing what you want to achieve picture wise and then finding the lens/camera that will most conveniently allow to reach that vision.

Having said that, my main work horse for pretty much everything is the 24-70. Then I just accessorize around it... :)

40-70mm is a fairly big gap to have. Might be worth you going through your favourite shots and seeing how many have been taken using that range. Personally, my 24-70 is my most used lens (on FF) and I'm seriously considering upgrading mine from the Sigma version to the Nikon but I may need to find one 2nd hand somewhere that takes trade-ins.

I have a Sigma EX 10-20 remaining from my 50D. It isnot that old, but with recent drop in price for a new one won't even half cover some decent glass in the 24-70 range.

Keep saving I guess.. Thanks for the advice it is appreciated.
