I have a d7200 and just bought a new to me , but pre used Nikon 16-85 mm.
On auto focus it wont focus at 16mm , it will however focus ok if I zoom in a little.
On manual focus it will work throughout the range.
Is it normal to expect to have to be in manual focus when at full wide angle , or do you think it may be duff?
 
Sounds to me as if that is the reason it was sold as it had a fault already with the internal drive. How was it advertised is the next question.If advertised as in perfect working condition then I would ask for a replacement or money back from the seller. The auto focus should work at whatever mm the lens is at.

Any problem with a lens should be pointed out at point of sale or it is a case of selling "goods not fit for purpose" and then you have legal rights which would be the next step. If it was a trader bought from, then obviously report the matter to the trading standards people. if a private purchase then if no satisfaction the small claims court would be the way to go.

I have 12-24 /24-120/24-70mm lenses and no problems with any on a D300 or D800 camera

That lens new is just under £400 so in photography terms not that expensive. first introduced in
28 January 2008. so it could already be almost 18 years old

Does the lens hunt when trying to find focus or do nothing
 
No , it just does nothing , when I partially depress the button , the arrow indicator in the display points to the left , if I zoom in a little bit ,even if just to 18mm it will then focus and fire.
 
i suspect it is a settings issue rather than a fault , at the mo I have it on afs-a multipoint, but I dont want to miss my opportunity to send it back if it is indeed faulty
 
Robert I would just send it back with the fault listed and see what the seller says. Don't leave it too long or you might not be able to make a claim. Does a friend have a Nikon you could try it out on?
 
If the lens does nothing, then works when you zoom in a little, that would normally point to a problem,I had a Sigma that had a similar problem and it was a faulty ribbon cable in the lens.
 
Yes , thanks ,I have spoken to the seller who is most reasonable and has asked me to send back for a refund.

Good get it in the post asap send it registered so you know it has been received and proof of posting as well
 
Bought a brand new one which is OK,
Just want to say how pleased I am with the experience i had with the original seller , (100% ebay seller), even refunded my return postage, would definately buy from him again .
