depends on the noise exactly. Several make a slight whirring noise as the motors zoom in out..... and yes at times the AF can make a noise as it tries to work out what you're focusing on and adjucts accordingly.......
Would be useful to know what lens it is. A friend of mine bought a Tamron zoom for his 30D and it sounds rough when it's focussing (compared to a Canon USM) works fine though.
Is it a new lens or an old one? I've got an old sigma that used to grind when using AF as the drive on the body didn't quite fit the drive on the lens so they used to just ride over each other. If they're both new I'd say you'd got a problem and need to take them back.
yep,sounds like the gear stripping problem as richard mentions above.if it's recently bought,contact sigmaUK and they should ask you to send it to them for repair under warranty.
