Is it just me or did old fully manual cameras and lenses not just look much cooler!!!

Yes, I agree!
That's why I just use classic manual focus lenses in my dSLR's. :)
The best ones are at least as good as L primes and they are built like tanks.

About the cameras, today I received the one that is - in my opinion - the best looking digital camera ever made, the Epson RD-1. It came with a hand-made Luigi leather half-case (dark brown), which is very expensive, but makes it look gorgeous and even more vintage.
The RD-1 really feels and looks like a classic rangefinder film camera. You can also use it without caring about the LCD.

In handling and feeling, it surpasses the Leica M8.

It looks like this one, with the same case:

Very very nice!

I've got a similar case for my Leica M5. Smells lovely!

Only the Canon F1 and F1n gave you the choice of screens

i meant for new canons to facilitate the use of old lenses :)

i have 40D with an ef D focusing screen that helps my composition, there are a few other versions and other brands that are designed to help with focusing manually.

there are lots of bits of kit out there to help you get the best from a hybrid set up.

I know this is a film camera thread, and i toy with film but i suck at it and it's a lot more expensive to fail at film :'(

I agree! I love my old Yashica Minister III

Was a cheap buy, but I love how it looks.

STOPIT NOW!

I have just sold all my old Nikon kit to go digital.
Do I regret it?
Course I do.:bang:

Nikons FM2 & FE2 bodies, 20mm, 50mm, 135mm, 35 - 105mm, 300mm (all Nikkors).
Sold the lot - how stupid was that!

Well i went ahead & ordered a Trip 35 from Tripman.

This one

You have good taste. Luigi cases are the best in the world! :)

About interchangeable focusing screens, of course the the F1 isn't the only one to offer that possibility! I think the OM-1 was the first model, but i'm not 100% sure.

Some gear I already had:

I was about to sell my nikon FM2n, 105mm f2.5,50mm f1.8 and 24mm f2.8 all AIs lenses and 52 mm filters but for what i was offered decided to keep them and try out some infared b&w film and Velva slide film so my next purches is not going to be a new lens but a IR filter and a nice camera bag and start enjoying photography again
Glad i read this forum
Any photographers in the Warrington area ,please get in touch

having sold my old faithful Minolta XD5 a few years ago after ~25 years of service I've recently had a hankering to get 1 again.
& just this weekend an XD7 arrived at my door :)
Surprisingly small compared to my AF bodies, solid (full metal body), great viewfinder, will even work without batteries (shutter has a single mechanical backup speed)

"a modern digital SLR but a fully manual version with all the old top dials etc"
OK so it has plenty of auto as well but ever seen a KM Dynax 7D?
Probably the nearest that you'll get.

Ever since utofocus came long in film cameras and especially with DSLR's most cameras and many lenses do look like plastuc blobs, yes we all want the results but we also want to get tactile pleasure out of using our cameras,a few weeks ago I used a Minolta 7D and it was streets ahead in the "User Coolness" stakes and it owner drooled over the quality of its 6 megapixel sensor as well.

Yep, very much so - in fact I'm swapping my minty Nikon F5 for a minty Nikon F3 with another forum member this month...

Plus I have been rediscovering the joys of this little sweetie, just of late:

Some of them do look great, particularly with polished metal surfaces. Leica is very tempting. But what is wrong with the look of 1Ds and a big fat L on top? Everyone in the street seems to notice that and go 'Oh ahh..' xxD didn't get any attention at all so must be not cool.

P.S. I wonder what my black Canon A-1 would look like if I remove the paint and polish it. It is made of brass and would look amazing... I don't quite have the confidence but that would look cool if done properly. I can't believe Canon put black paint over it. Then T90 is half made of copper body, yet looks so ugly plasticky.

there are a few cameras that give the rangfinder look/feel with all the advantages of digital like the Leica Digilux2 or is twin the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1

hopefully i'll be getting an LC1 of a friend this week as its a lovely camera to use & despite a modest resolution gives excellent results
even the noise it has is very grain like :)
not as fast as a modern DSLR but meters well & has a fantastic Leica Vario Summicron lens that is 28-90mm in 35mm terms
have a look on the flickr group for more examples here - http://www.flickr.com/groups/lux2lc1/pool/
