Is It Safe To Transport a Canon 500mm f/4 L IS With The Hood Attached?

As per title...Is it safe to carry/transport a Canon 500mm f/4 L IS USM lens with the lens hood fitted i.e. not reversed?

I have seen people transport these lenses attached to a body and the hood fitted in a Lowpro Lens Trekker 600 AW II backpack. This makes it ready to use right out of the bag.

The lens hood is normally attached but reversed during transport, so if it is not reversed there will probably be more stress on it? I'm just not sure if it is safe to do so.

Any comments?

Thanks for your comments Bob. Out of interest which bag are you using since the Lens Trekker will surely not be deep enough for a body and a 600mm attached?

Personally I hate large bags, so I transport my lens with the hood reversed and without the camera attached, in a smaller bag. When I (eventually) get all set up, people are amazed that I had the kit I use in such a diminutive bag. I use a Thinktank Glass Taxi. I have missed shots due to not being able to set up in time, but generally proper bird shots are as a result of patience and stalking, rather than point and shoot, so I am happy that no once-in-a-lifetime opportunities have passed me by.

I use a Kinesis Long Lens Case (L622 IIRC)

I normally use a blanket in the car with body attached always ready for shooting then and i either carry the 600mm or put it on a tripod and carry it. I use 2 stretch rucksack covers in case in rains. Normally i have the backpack on which is the lowepro vertex 300 this will take the 600mm and a 300mm f4 [note not with body attached] also 2 bodies plus extras it has a laptop compartment which is where i keep my water proofs. plus you can add a couple of other pouches if you like. When im doing dippers i use the camera bag to rest the 600mm on saves carrying a tripod
