Is it wise to exchange my Sigma 70-200mm for a Nikkor 180mm f2.8?

I have a Sigma 70-200mm, I hardly carry it anywhere now, I have a Nikon 85mm and sigma 105mm for the lower end. Meaning I only ever take it out when I really want to photograph some thing "far away"

I really struggle to hand hold it, even on a mono pod I can see moiton burr in one axis if I don't use 1/200 or faster at 200mm (I know I'm a weakling!)

I noticed the 180mm is sharper and half the weight of the sigma. is it a good idea to swap them?

Seems like a good idea. But the fact that you mentioned motion blur when on a monopod makes me think you need something with VR. I'm not familiar with the 180, don't know if it's got it or not.

monopod not tripod! I would be worroed if I couldn't hold it steady on a tripod.

I probably need to get stronger or get a better way of holding it!

I drool over the 200mm f2 VR, But I don't deserive a lens like that!

Hi Stuart,
No experience here on Sigma 70-200 but I own Nikon 70-200 VRI and Nikon 180/2.8. Believe me or not but the prime is always in my bag when traveling or in vacations. It is one of the best ever produced lens from Nikon and I always shoot it handheld. I take the zoom only in some kind of low light events where I know that I will need its versatility. Otherwise my travel kit is 24/1.4 85/1.4 AF-D and 180/2.8. Go for it and do not look back!

I had a 180mm back when I was using 35mm. Its a fantastic lens, lightweight, robust, and easy to pack for travel. I've seen them go (in perfect condition) for a little over 300.00.
